Real Women - Beauty Through The Decades The Realistic Way
To be frank, it was supposed to be just another "Beauty Through The Decades" video. I saw lots of them already, but they all have seemed to show beauty standards in a very stereotypical and pop-culture way, so I wanted to do a more historically accurate one. As I was doing some research, I became more and more aware that beautiful faces and fashion we see on the photos, ads and fashion plates are just an idealistic version of reality. So here's to reality. NOTES: It was hard for me to make this video universal and find some papers referring to the whole Europe or even the whole world, so the numbers I used may be a little misleading. To make it clear: - 40% of women in factories (1901) refers to Great Britain only - one out of nine women working in domestic service refers to Russia. If you know any other specific numbers referring to a wider cultural context I'd be more than greatful. ______ Visit my blog: http://www.domowakostiumologia.blogspot.com

ProfoundTwi - Fashion; Through the Ages
My goodness, I can't believe how long its been since I last put one of these out. I wish I could say I've been devoting my time to noble pursuits or some grand project; however, the unfortunate truth is that my time has seemingly disappeared without any significant event. Anyway, enough dwelling, here's an attempt at a "filter house" track about the element of generosity: Rarity. As always, thank you so much for listening, see below for some download links and rambling thoughts. MP3 Download Link: http://bit.ly/1hgRwil iTunes Compatible "Album Artwork": http://i.imgur.com/cWTIRrr.png Rarity Vector: Quanno3 Cutie Mark Vector: uxyd Rambling Thoughts: Unlike to the rest of the Mane 6, Rarity arguably acts contrary to her element more than any other pony, with her dramatically fashion obsessed persona frequently shining through; occasionally at the cost of more pressing or important concerns. That being said, at her core, Rarity still continues to embody selflessness, with her heart of generosity remaining unshakable even in times of crisis. Here's to a lovely 2014.

The Jackie Look: Branding a Presidency Through Fashion
The Jackie Look: Branding a Presidency Through Fashion http://www.imamuseum.org/talk/jackie-look-branding-presidency-through-fashion What unspoken messages do First Ladies send with fashion? And how did the unforgettable Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy break the mold to present her husband's candidacy and presidency as progressive and modern? Sandy McLendon, design historian and editor of jetsetmodern.com, and former contributor and senior editor at Modernism Magazine, takes a visual tour through Jackie's strategic choices: hiring Hollywood costume designer Oleg Cassini; embracing the slim sheath dress and fuss-free pillbox hat (contrasted with Mamie Eisenhower's lacy, girlish selections); and selecting—down to the detail—trim, elegant gowns suitable for superpower diplomacy. McLendon unpacks the elements of "The Jackie Look" so desired by millions of women of the time, and influential to pop culture then and now.

14 American Beauty Standards By The Decades
From the 1960s Mods and Hippies, to the matte lips and thick eyebrows of today, here are 14 American Beauty Standards By the Decades. Subscribe for weekly wacky videos and learn interesting facts about the world with awesome top 10 lists and other amazing videos. 7. The 1960s: Mods and Hippies While the start of the 1960s wasn’t so different from the late 1950s, what changed a few years into the decade was the introduction of hairspray as a product. Women’s hair became more voluminous, their eyeliner game was more intricate and heavy, and, thanks to models like Edie Sedgwick and her British counterpart Twiggy, the pixie cut and waif-ish looks were in. Ideal women were skinnier in the 1960s, a trend that continued even when fashion started to veer into a more hippie, long-haired look. 6. The 1970s: Sporty Casual Hippie culture dipped into the beginning of the 1970s, too. Long hair was in--for men and women. But something else that became more common in the 1970s was society adapting to wear less formal clothes. Up until then, most people’s wardrobes still consisted of tailored sutis and dresses with tailored dresses and trousers and button ups still a part of mainstream fashion. But through the 70s, men and women alike wore more sneakers. Denim was more popular than ever as were tracksuits, track shorts, and other athletic wear. 5. The 1980s: Big Hair and Big Makeup Punk rock had been introduced in America during the late 1970s, which means the more DIY, edgy look would go mainstream by the 1980s. Clothes were full of patches and pins, and girls who wanted to look like Madonna had tattered layers upon layers of clothes and arms full of bracelets.Hair was bigger than ever, as hairspray took the feathered look of the 70s to a more frizzy extreme in the 80s, or even mohawks depending on your style. 4. The 1990s Eyebrows hit an all time skinny factor during the 90s. Eyebrows being pencil thin was the popular look of the decade, which carried on into the early 2000s. This era was also when grunge became a more popular fashion as the grunge scene in the Pacific Northwest grew into a movement. The 90s was a decade of anything goes as far as fashion was concerned. Models started look skinnier and skinnier than ever before--think more like like Kate Moss, and Jennifer Aniston had introduced a new haircut that she made popular by showcasing on Friends. Then you had the Spice Girls which threw together a bunch of different fashion trends and made it somewhat uniform. 3. The early 2000s Since the 2000s were one of the most recent past decades, it makes sense that people nowadays shudder to think of the way they dressed nearly 20 years ago. It took the crop tops of the 90s and paired it with super low waist bottoms. In the age before skinny jeans, flared jeans were all the rage. And while it was ideal for women to still be really skinny, they still had to look incredibly fit, too, so that they could show off their lean abs in their midriff shirts. 2. Early 2010s Although society is still very far from accepting all sorts of shapes and sizes as far as women’s bodies are concerned, with the rising popularity in health and fitness, there’s been a decrease of the number of scary-thin images of women that a decade ago would have been considered body goals. What also became popular by the early 2010s as the resurgence of the grunge look that was so popular in the early 90s. Nearly 10 years ago, long hair was more in fashion, as well as layers of different patterns and textures, and blonde hair. 1. Now It’s interesting how fast beauty standards change. It hasn’t even been a full decade yet and trends are already drastically different from when the 2010s first started. The second half of the 2010s made matte lipstick (and matte makeup in general) more popular. With the rise of platforms like Instagram and Youtube, makeup artistry amongst the general public has come to an all time high, with contouring, highlighting, and full eyebrows more desirable. Even lately, matte lipstick is already starting to give way to glossier lip wear. Pastel hair is still popular, but the more edgy alternative falls to grey hair and silver tones instead. Women are encouraged to be more fit, showing off fuller figures with washboard stomachs--perhaps as a way to further deviate from the paper-thin image that’s been so popular the past 20 years.

Dressing the Indian woman through history
http://twitter.com/onlyfirstnews This week in India a man slapped actress Gauhar Khan on a TV set for wearing a "short dress" and news emerged of outrage in a Mumbai law college at a strict dress code imposed on students. Fashion historian Toolika Gupta looks at ideas of decorum in fashion across India through the ages. Every country has its own erogenous zones. What many Indians today believe are home-grown ideas of decorum and modesty are in fact British imports - bequeathed to us by the Raj. The earliest representations of women show them with minimal clothing. In sculptures from the Maury and Sunga periods (about 300 BC) - men and women wore rectangular pieces of fabric, on the lower part of the body and one on the upper part. Little else. Images from the Gupta period - about the 7th or 8th Century - show stitched upper garments along with a breast band, as well as a lower garment. Modesty has had different definitions over time and in different regions and communities. It was not always about covering your face and body and in many respects India's hot climate led the way. People just did what was convenient. But the regional variations are interesting. In southern India, even in colonial times, some women did not cover the upper part of their body. And throughout India's history of contact with different cultures - with Greek, Roman, Arab and Chinese influences coming in - fashions and ideas began to change. In the 15th Century we see Muslim and Hindu women wearing different outfits and the influence of the Mughal empire was decisive - they ruled most of India and Pakistan in the 16th and 17th Centuries. I have not seen written codes about how to dress, but Muslim women normally covered themselves and wore divided garments. These outfits gave birth to garments like the salwar kameez - virtually seen as a national dress in India today. In Bengal, in the Victorian era, some women did not wear blouses under their saris - they went bare-breasted. This did not suit Victorian society, which had its own ideas of propriety, and blouses increasingly became the norm. It was Jnanadanandini Debi, the wife of Satyendranath Tagore - brother of the famous Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore - who popularised the blouses, jackets and chemises and the modern style of the sari today after she was reportedly refused entry to clubs under the Raj for wearing the sari fabric over her bare breasts. Tagore is believed to have actively encouraged his wife to adopt Western ideas. The terms "blouse" and "petticoat" - both English - made the leap into Indian vocabulary in the Victorian era. Shirts also came to be worn under the sari as part of high fashion and these rather British innovations are considered traditional garments. Even though it can be revealing, as the crop top leaves the midriff bare, the sari blouse has long been deemed decorous and associated with tradition. In India it was important for a woman to cover her body with a draped fabric here no matter what is underneath. The British influence only became stronger over time. We see different kinds of blouses coming in with sleeve structures, and various necklines In India, unlike in Britain, there are no written codes of conduct or sumptuary laws about what should be worn. What was considered suitable was spread through word of mouth. So today's guardians of the hemline - who no doubt believe they are safeguarding women by prescribing what women should wear - are following in the footsteps of older political overlords. Indian women now are much freer to do what they want, at least in the cities, yet we see dress codes being set and women condemned for what they wear. Some people even make an association between clothing and rape. These people don't understand that ideas of decency are constantly changing and rape is not a consequence of what women wear but of how certain men think. Our dress is our identity. But what we think of as traditional Indian modesty, can turn out not be not very Indian at all.

How To Tell Your Story Through Clothing Step-by-Step with Tanner Guzy of Masculine Style
Click here to read the full interview and learn about Style Archetypes and how you can tell your story through style: https://gentl.mn/how-to-tell-a-story-with-clothes-tanner-guzy Today I am here with Tanner Guzy from Masculine Style. In this video we discuss how you can tell your personal story with style and using clothing. You can check out Tanner's youtube channel here and his website Masculine Style here http://www.masculine-style.com 0:26 Tell us more about this concept of having a story that you tell by dressing. I think it’s foreign for most men. 02:54 So, if someone is like not familiar with this concept of telling a story. How do you think they should start? 05:00 Okay, so let’s take a step back and assume what are the pillars that you think are most important when it comes to telling a story? 07:19 It's kind of a lack of self-confidence that makes you want to dress like your tribe. How would you reply to that? 09:00 So taste, how do you develop it in your opinion? What are the pillars to get there? How would you say or what do you think can help men to develop this taste or how would you define it? 11:05 So apart from tribe and taste. What are the other pillars? 13:14 What do you think or why do you think most men assume things are too formal for them and they naturally gravitate towards the more casual end of the spectrum. 15:33 Let's move on to the next pillar. 17:13 So apart form effort, what is the next pillar? 21:21 On your website a Masculine Style should go much more in depth and teach them about all these principles. Tell us a little more about that. 22:22 So if people enjoy this conversation, where should they go? Victorian realities - how did they use the toilet??!
After our recent videos ( Moving in a crinoline cage; Dressing up a Victorian ), one of the most common questions was this - 'How on earth did they use the toilet in all those skirts, petticoat, bustles, crinolines and what else is there hiding under the Victorian Skirts???!' And I just couldn't ignore it - so behold, a very silly video dealing with the daily reality of a Victorian life.... No nudity, and no real natural functions are being performed - all demonstration of how the clothes moved and were manipulated. if you are easily offended by watching someone pretend to go to the loo, simply don't watch :-) Correction - When talking about the bustle folding, I of course mean accordion, not harmonica... :-( music:Camille Saint -Sans Dance Macabre

(April 29, 2015) https://books.google.com/books?id=jYL9cPE_M5EC Pool, Daniel. "What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew." Simon & Schuster. 1993. Transcript: * OK, imagine you’re an unmarried lady out for a stroll in 19th-century London. First of all, you better not be alone. That’s right: You need an escort. But what happens if you see a man you recognize? Well, first of all, he’s not allowed to talk to you unless you make a gesture of recognition first. Which, OK, I can kind of see the appeal of that one – you don’t have to pretend to be doing something on your phone to avoid making eye contact, etc. But let’s say you really want to stop and talk to this guy: Well... you can’t. Or at least you shouldn’t. If you want to talk to him, instead of stopping, you can offer him your hand, which he can take, but only _after_ lifting his hat, using the hand farthest away from you. Once he takes your hand, he has to walk along with you, but even then you can’t just gab away. According to _Cassell’s Household Guide_, "Strict reticence of speech and conduct should be observed in public." That means no "loud talking" or "animated discussions." And if you see a gentleman you’d like to speak to, but he’s smoking a cigar, tough luck. It is amazingly rude for a man to smoke in the presence of a woman, so if you acknowledge him, he’ll have to put out his cigar, and for all you know it might have been a really expensive cigar, and now you’ve just ruined his morning. Nice work, Myrtle. * Do you ever have that problem where you want to date the neighbor’s daughter but you don’t know if she’s technically “on the market” yet, or if her parents still consider her a child? No? Good! Because that’s amazingly creepy! Fortunately, the Victorians had a formalized system for avoiding this problem: Presentation at court. If you were a respectable family who wanted to announce that your son or daughter was ready for courtship -- which is basically dating, minus all the fun, plus a lot of conversations with chaperones to determine if young men were predisposed to “base amusements” -- you could do this at a specialized event. Young men could be introduced at events called “levees,” which were held several times a year. Young ladies could be introduced at presentation events held at St. James Palace – and these events didn’t skimp on the pomp and protocol either. Men had to wear buckled shoes and swords. Ladies had to stick tall feathers in their hair and drag 3-yard trains behind their dresses. But once the kids are ready to start dating, that’s when the etiquette fangs really sink in: * Lots of parents get weirdly strict and judgmental when their kids start dating, but Victorian England really took it to another level. First of all, etiquette manuals of the time advised young lovers that, technically, you’re _supposed_ to look for partners only within your own social class, because we all know how awkward it is when you’re a Baroness and you’re trying to chat up a nice Viscount, and his mother is just right over there on the fainting couch looking at you with eyes that say, “Trash.”
