The Secret River: extended trailer

02:01
WARNING: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are warned that this video may contain images and voices of deceased persons. Based on Kate Grenville's award-winning novel, the two-part mini-series The Secret River tells the deeply personal story of Will and Sal Thornhill, early convict colonists, who lay claim to a plot of land on the then-remote Hawkesbury River. The Secret River dramatises the British colonisation of Australia in microcosm, with the dispossession of Indigenous Australians made comprehensible and ultimately heartbreaking as Will's claim over a piece land he titles "Thornhill's Point", brings his family and neighbours into conflict with the traditional custodians of the land they have settled on. Starring Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Sarah Snook, Tim Minchin, Lachy Hulme and Trevor Jamieson, The Secret River will screen Sunday 14 & 21 June at 8.30pm on ABC. #TheSecretRiver

Texts in the City: The Secret River

47:58
In this edition of Texts in the City - the last with host Tony Wilson - writer and educator Tony Birch lends his knowledge of indigenous history to our understanding of Kate Grenville’s novel, The Secret River. Subject matter covered in the discussion includes: the role of women in Grenville’s story and indigenous society, early settlers' hunger for land, and the centrality of conflict in the book and in fiction more generally. Wilson and Birch also talk about the politics of the book, particularly around the time of its release, when questions were raised over the novelisation of history as well as whether non-indigenous writers should be able to write about indigenous characters. What The Secret River offers, Birch says, is a reflection of how different cultures can get along with the aid of insight. It’s a book that urges us to consider our relationship with other peoples in contemporary society.

The Secret River - Festival TV, 2013

07:42
Sydney Theatre Company Presents THE SECRET RIVER By Kate Grenville. Adapted for the stage by Andrew Bovell 2013 PERTH FESTIVAL Mon 25 Feb 2013 - Sat 2 Mar 2013 Three of Australia's most revered artists, director Neil Armfield (Keating! The Musical, Cloudstreet), writer Andrew Bovell (Lantana, When the Rain Stops Falling) and artistic associate Stephen Page (The Sapphires, Bran Nue Dae) come together for the first time to adapt Kate Grenville's prize-winning novel for the stage. This is the story of two families divided by culture and land. Convict William Thornhill, exiled from the stinking slums of early 19th-century London, discovers that the penal colony offers something that he never dared to hope for before: a place of his own. A stretch of land on the Hawkesbury River is Thornhill's for the taking. As he and his family seek to establish themselves in this unfamiliar territory, they find that they are not the only ones to lay claim to the land. This part of the Hawkesbury is already home to a family of Dharug people, who are reluctant to leave on account of these intruders. As Thornhill's attachment to the place and the dream deepens, he is driven to make a terrible decision that will haunt him for the rest of his life. With a thrilling cast including Trevor Jamieson and Jeremy Sims, The Secret River is a major Festival co-commission that vividly explores life in colonial Australia. This story has been produced for STUDIO's 'Festival TV' program, which will air in February 2013. STUDIO is Australia's arts & entertainment channel, available on channel 132 on FOXTEL..

Drunk LIterature s1e12 The Secret River

01:35:29
In this video we start with a discussion of post colonial literature, what it is and how it works. Forneus is here to provide insider information on Australian history as this book is about early penal colony Australia. The first sections is about the main character, Thrornhill, trying to make a life for himself in London, his grinding poverty, and how all his attempts fail, like the fact that his business gets ruined because collectors take his boat to pay his father in laws debts. So he turns to stealing to make ends meet. Eventually he gets caught stealing in a set up by his employer. His wife saves his life by appealing to have his sentence commuted from life to deportation. We discuss the living conditions in the penal colony and give background on the different regions of the country and the different ethnicities involved. The second part of the book talks about how Thornhill and his family starts to make money with his wife selling rum out of their shack in Sydney. The first Aboriginal character is introduced, who is mostly know for being drunk all the time and dancing around in beat up western women's clothing. Thornhill also starts trading up river with Blackwood, who shows him the secret river and Thrornhill begins his dream of owning land on the river and become part of the aristocracy. We discuss Blackwood's character. He is the only one in the novel who can speak with the Aborigines but he refuses to use this ability to create better relations between the two groups. Thrornhill's attempts at farming show the westerners trying to make Australia over in their image in a very stupid way and how this has wrecked the environment. Also, he ruins the Aboriginal tuber farming in the process. Thornhill wants to have conflict with his wife because she wants to return to England and he now is obsessed with having this land. He promises they will return in five years but secretly hopes she will forget, showing how his desire for the land is become more important to him than morals or human relationships. The character of Smasher is introduced, who is so extremely racist that he even makes all the other whites uncomfortable but no one really speaks up about it. Thornhill finds “the fish” and how this further symbolizes his isolation and colonial mindset. He also gets himself some convict slaves of his own and treats them pretty shit even though he has been in the same boat and one of them was even actually an old friend of his, he desire to move up the social ladder, rather than have solidarity with his peers. Smasher continues to get progressively more cruel and crazy which causes relationship to deteriorate into violence and the colonists decide they have to kill the Aborigines to protect themselves. Then we discuss the ending where the story kind of breaks down. Thornhill's dream of being a landowning gentry comes true on the surface but there is some little thing wrong with EVERYTHING that he tries to do. But this strains believibility, especially because this is portrayed as the universe punishing him for killing the Aborigines, instead of Thornhill doing mental gymnastics to justify himself since that what he spent most of the novel doing. As a whole, the book lures you into being sympathetic for Thornhill and then gradually revealing how he isn't a nice person at all.

This classic children's book was published posthumously in 1955, after Marjorie Kinnan's Rawlings had died. It is not especially well known, but it is one of my favorites. I own a hard back cover from 1955. In this video, I read the beginning of the story to Bow.

The Secret River on ABC

Written by award winning author Kate Grenville "The Secret River is fabulous historical fiction, a rich and challenging re-imagining of familiar territory...a riveting, dramatic exercise in understanding." - The Australian In 1806 William Thornhill is transported for life from the slums of London to New South Wales. His arrival with wife Sal and their children at first feels like a death sentence. But Thornhill discovers the colony can turn a person into a free man, and eight years later he sails up the Hawkesbury and claims his own patch of ground. However, from the moment he sets foot on this land he has the feeling of being watched by the original inhabitants, the Darug people. There is tension between the Aboriginals and the new settlers, and as the situation spirals out of control Thornhill has to make the toughest decision of his life. Paul Blackwell's reading captures the hopes, dreams, conflict and struggle at the heart of this historical masterpiece. http://bit.ly/1H1wEqg

How the Mississippi shantyboats helped build a culture

19:07
“I do not know much about gods; but I think that the river Is a strong brown god—sullen, untamed and intractable” - “Dry Salvages”, T.S. Eliot Long before Wes Modes began planning a journey down the Mississippi, he started building a traditional barge-bottom houseboat in a California backyard out of rustic reclaimed materials (e.g. old fences and chicken coops). Once his shantyboat was complete he hatched a plan to transport it across the country from Santa Cruz to Minnesota to begin a “Huck-Finn style” journey down the iconic American river. Following in the footsteps of Harlan and Anna Hubbard, whose eight-year journey down the Mississippi and Ohio rivers was chronicled in Harlan’s book “Shantytown”, Modes launched his own float 70 years later. His “Secret History of American River People” is part personal adventure and part research project, collecting stories of “river people” along the banks. Complete with lofted bed, compost toilet and full-kitchen (propane-powered camp stove and plumbed sink), his 10-by-8-foot houseboat cabin serves as both floating home and mobile office for his summertime sojourns. After two summers on the Mississippi recording stories for his “Secret History of American River People”, Modes (along with first mate Lauren Benz) set out to tackle the 652-mile Tennessee River from Knoxville to Paducah, Kentucky. We caught up with him in Knoxville, which he pointed out is also the setting for Cormac McCarthy’s semi-autobiographical shantyboat novel “Suttree”. Nearly everywhere he goes, Modes has discovered that the times of shantyboat living have largely disappeared. “I just finished an interview with somebody,” he explained from Volunteer Landing in Knoxville. “He was saying when he was a kid growing up in the sixties there were people living along the banks of some of the creeks and the river, but by the mid-to-late seventies those people were all gone. And by the eighties they had renewed the riverfront and by the nineties... all those people who used to live along the rivers in little homemade shacks and shanty boats were instead displaced.” Modes uses crowdfunding to help pay for his trips where he hopes to tell the stories of people who don’t usually make the history books. “I think that’s kind of like this idea of postmodern history in which you’re examining the little tales of people, the tales of you and I, the relationships in our lives, and the adventures we’d had and the hardships we’ve endured. Those are a form of history that is just as valid and just as legitimate as history with a capital H: history that makes the dominant narrative of the people who generally are the victors and the people who win and the people who write the history books.“ Secret History of American River People: http://peoplesriverhistory.us/ Wes’ crowdfunding for 2017: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1245766964/a-secret-history-sacramento-river-expedition Original story: https://faircompanies.com/videos/how-shantyboats-down-the-mississippi-helped-build-character/
