SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Licensing means renting or leasing of an intangible asset. It is a process of creating and managing contracts between the owner of a brand and a company or individual who wants to use the brand in association with a product, for an agreed period of time, within an agreed territory. Licensing is used by brand owners to extend a trademark or character onto products of a completely different nature. Examples of intangible assets include a song ("Somewhere Over The Rainbow"), a character (Donald Duck), a name (Michael Jordan), or a brand (The Ritz-Carlton). An arrangement to license a brand requires a licensing agreement. A licensing agreement authorizes a company which markets a product or service (a licensee) to lease or rent a brand from a brand owner who operates a licensing program (a licensor). A company may choose to license its brand(s) when they believe there is strong consumer acceptance for brand extensions or products. For example, when Apple launched the iPod there was an immediate need for accessories such as headphones, charging and syncing stations and carrying cases. Apple decided not to manufacture these products and instead chose to have a licensee make the products. By doing so, Apple could offer branded "Earbud Headphones", "iPod docking stations" and "iPod socks." Each is made by a separate company but together offer the consumer an elegant solution. All of these accessories are sold by licensees. Apart from benefits to licensors, there are benefits to licensees as well. Licensees lease the rights to a brand for incorporation into their merchandise, but do not share ownership in it. Having access to major national and global brands, and the logos and trademarks associated with those brands, gives the licensee significant benefits. The most important of these is the marketing power the brand brings to the licensee’s products. When brand managers enter or extend into new product categories via licensing they create an opportunity for a licensee to grow their company. Below is an example of the licensed product process steps: Licensor chooses the product categories to be licensed. Licensor finds and negotiates a license with the best licensees. Licensees develop concepts, prototypes and final production samples and submit for approval. Licensor approves licensed products for sale. Licensees sell licensed products to authorized retailers. Licensees expect that the license will provide them with sales growth. This sales growth may be in the form of growth within existing market or the opportunity to enter a new market. To achieve this, licensees expect that the brand they are licensing has significant brand preference, that it will open doors and ultimately help them meet or exceed their business objectives. The licensing contract forces the licensee to achieve certain sales targets and royalties; therefore, the goal of the licensee is to quickly meet their business objectives, thereby achieving their contract obligations. Royalties are the monies paid to a licensor by the licensee for the right to use the licensed property. It is calculated by multiplying the Royalty Rate by the Net Sales. The main international professional association for brand licensing is the Licensing Industry Merchandiser's Association, which sponsors the annual Licensing International Expo.....

What is TRADEMARK CLASSIFICATION? What does TRADEMARK CLASSIFICATION mean?

What is TRADEMARK CLASSIFICATION? What does TRADEMARK CLASSIFICATION mean? TRADEMARK CLASSIFICATION meaning - TRADEMARK CLASSIFICATION definition - TRADEMARK CLASSIFICATION explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ A trademark classification is a way the trademark examiners and applicants' trademark attorneys arrange documents, such as trademark and service mark applications, according to the description and scope of the types of goods or services to which the marks apply. The same trademark or service may be (or in many cases MUST be) classified in several classes, and some countries permit several classes to be registered in the same document. There are fees ordinarily associated with each classification, whether for initial application or later renewal. An application filed for descriptions covering more than one class of goods or services may also be divided later (for a fee) into several different applications for synchronization with a phased roll-out of multiple classes of products. Because of international priority claim issues, classes may be deleted from an application but not added after the initial filing date. There are often disputes regarding the exact classification to apply in an application, partly because prior registrations may already occupy broad areas that overlap the products described by a later applicant. Many countries permit marks to cover an entire class without regard to specific descriptions of goods or services. There is a general classification of marks into trademarks, service marks, certification marks and collective marks, each of which have slightly different rules. Within the broad categories of trademarks and service marks there are dozens of international classes defined for each category. See, e.g., International (Nice) Classification of Goods and Services. For the purpose of obtaining a trademark clearance, it is advisable to search all related classifications of goods and services that could interact with or be supplied by a potentially confusing mark that already exists. In the United States, the USPTO maintains the Acceptable Identification of Goods and Services Manual to assist applicants and examiners to distinguish between classifications properly and consistently. Specific descriptions must be submitted for each type of goods and services to be covered by the registration, and overly broad terms will be rejected, depending upon how "crowded" a classification may be.

Allison Ames: Unexpected Brands in Lifestyle Licensing #LU119

01:13
Fashion and celebrity brands were once the sole inspiration for lifestyle licensing programs, but today, unexpected brands are venturing into lifestyle products. Social media and other digital platforms have enabled brands to cultivate their identities and connect with consumers in new ways and retailers want to offer consumers a more well-rounded shopping experience. Because of these factors, there is a growing opportunity for brands to extend their product offering across multiple categories and become part of consumers’ way of life. Looking at brands across food and beverage, spirits, beauty, health, automotive, gaming and tech, this discussion will explore the “lifestyle-ization” of brands today: Why do more and more brands have permission to extend into lifestyle categories? What role will licensing play as brands develop their lifestyle positioning? How will this widening of brand definition be received by consumers? How does a licensee recognize a strong lifestyle brand with which to partner? How does the product development process differ from other types of licenses?

What is BRAND EXTENSION? What does BRAND EXTENSION mean? BRAND EXTENSION meaning & explanation

10:02
What is BRAND EXTENSION? What does BRAND EXTENSION mean? BRAND EXTENSION meaning - BRAND EXTENSION definition - BRAND EXTENSION explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Brand extension or brand stretching is a marketing strategy in which a firm marketing a product with a well-developed image uses the same brand name in a different product category. The new product is called a spin-off. Organizations use this strategy to increase and leverage brand equity (definition: the net worth and long-term sustainability just from the renowned name). An example of a brand extension is Jello-gelatin creating Jello pudding pops. It increases awareness of the brand name and increases profitability from offerings in more than one product category. A brand's "extendibility" depends on how strong consumer's associations are to the brand's values and goals. Ralph Lauren's Polo brand successfully extended from clothing to home furnishings such as bedding and towels. Both clothing and bedding are made of linen and fulfill a similar consumer function of comfort and hominess. Arm & Hammer leveraged its brand equity from basic baking soda into the oral care and laundry care categories. By emphasizing its key attributes, the cleaning and deodorizing properties of its core product, Arm & Hammer was able to leverage those attributes into new categories with success. Another example is Virgin Group, which was initially a record label that has extended its brand successfully many times; from transportation (aeroplanes, trains) to games stores and video stores such as Virgin Megastores. In the 1990s, 81 percent of new products used brand extension to introduce new brands and to create sales. Launching a new product is not only time-consuming but also needs a big budget to create brand awareness and to promote a product's benefits. Brand extension is one of the new product development strategies which can reduce financial risk by using the parent brand name to enhance consumers' perception due to the core brand equity. While there can be significant benefits in brand extension strategies, there can also be significant risks, resulting in a diluted or severely damaged brand image. Poor choices for brand extension may dilute and deteriorate the core brand and damage the brand equity. Most of the literature focuses on the consumer evaluation and positive impact on parent brand. In practical cases, the failures of brand extension are at higher rate than the successes. Some studies show that negative impact may dilute brand image and equity. In spite of the positive impact of brand extension, negative association and wrong communication strategy do harm to the parent brand even brand family. Product extensions are versions of the same parent product that serve a segment of the target market and increase the variety of an offering. An example of a product extension is Coke vs. Diet Coke in the same product category of soft drinks. This tactic is undertaken due to the brand loyalty and brand awareness associated with an existing product. Consumers are more likely to buy a new product that has a reputable brand name on it than buy a similar product from a competitor without a reputable brand name. Consumers receive a product from a brand they trust, and the company offering the product can increase its product portfolio and potentially gain a larger share in the market in which it competes. Brand extension research mainly focuses on consumer evaluation of extension and attitude toward the parent brand. In their 1990 model, Aaker and Keller provide a sufficient depth and breadth proposition to examine consumer behaviour and a conceptual framework. The authors use three dimensions to measure the fit of extension. First, the "Complement" refers to consumers taking two product classes (extension and parent brand product) as complementary in satisfying their specific needs.

What is Licensing?

03:04
Licensing is the process of leasing a legally protected (that is, trademarked or copyrighted) entity – a name, likeness, logo, trademark, graphic design, slogan, signature, character, or a combination of several of these elements. The entity, known as the property or intellectual property, is then used in conjunction with a product. Many major companies and the media consider licensing a significant marketing tool. Licensing is a marketing and brand extension tool that is widely used by everyone from major corporations to the smallest of small business. Entertainment, sports and fashion are the areas of licensing that are most readily apparent to consumers, but the business reaches into the worlds of corporate brands, art, publishing, colleges and universities and non-profit groups, to name a few. Licensing can extend a corporate brand into new categories, areas of a store, or into new stores overall. Licensing is a way to move a brand into new businesses without making a major investment in new manufacturing processes, machinery or facilities. In a well-run licensing program, the property owner maintains control over the brand image and how it's portrayed (via the approvals process and other contractual strictures), but eventually reaps the benefit in additional revenue (royalties), but also in exposure in new channels or store aisles.

What is STORE BRAND? What does STORE BRAND mean? STORE BRAND meaning, definition & explanation

What is STORE BRAND? What does STORE BRAND mean? STORE BRAND meaning - STORE BRAND definition - STORE BRAND explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Store brands are a line of products strategically branded by a retailer within a single brand identity. They bear a similarity to the concept of house brands, private label brands (PLBs) in the United States, own brands in the UK, and home brands in Australia and generic brands. They are distinct in that a store brand is managed solely by the retailer for sale in only a specific chain of store. The retailer will design the manufacturing, packaging and marketing of the goods in order to build on the relationship between the products and the store's customer base. Store-brand goods are generally cheaper than national-brand goods, because the retailer can optimize the production to suit consumer demand and reduce advertising costs. Goods sold under a store brand are subject to the same regulatory oversight as goods sold under a national brand. Consumer demand for store brands might be related to individual characteristics such as demographics and socioeconomic variables. A store brand is a way of relating to different customers. Different types of store brands can relate to a customer through the choice of branding and building a relationship with the consumer. Store brands can relate to a consumer through various characteristics such as different demographics. The store brand is the only brand in which the retailer has the full responsibility of control such as development, sourcing, warehousing, merchandising and marketing. Whereas retailers make different decisions about national brands and leave it up to the manufacturer. With a store brand it is more important for the retailer as it plays a more definite role in the achievement or failure of its own label. This information is based on data from 34 food categories at 106 major supermarket chains, which operate in the largest 50 retail markets in the U.S. (Dhar, S. K., & Hoch, S. J. 1997) Although national brands have long dominated the retail scene, retailers generally use their national brands to draw customers to their stores. Recently department stores, supermarkets, service stations, clothiers and chemists have started to increase more store brands. Studies show that consumers are buying more and more store brands and don’t plan on returning to national brands anytime soon. (Kotler et al. 2013) Store brands are generally cheaper than national brands, which, with consumers becoming more price-conscious and less brand conscious, has increased store brand sales. (Kotler st al. 2013) Some marketers have predicted that store brands will eventually knock out all the strongest national brands.( Kotler et al. 2013) Store brands have a tendency to generate higher margins than national brands. Store brands have previously been known as low-price and low quality brands, but now they are currently positioned as value brands and brands with the aim to have the quality equivalent to manufacturer brands, but with lower prices. Retailers in the USA and Europe have made huge investments to launch store brands with the main object of securing significant financial benefits. Retailers have developed store brands in almost every product category and their economic value is constantly increasing. Store image, store loyalty and store satisfaction have a positive impact on the acceptance of store brand extensions. Sometimes the retailer’s brand image depends on the images that the store brands set. Although the store brands have positive impacts on the retailers image. “Retailers can find a rationale for investing in their store brand range in order to differentiate themselves from their competitors.”( Kremer, F., & Viot, C. 2012). The retailers store brand image should relate to their own store brand and the price image of the store brand is positively related to the retailer price image. The relationship between store brand loyalty and store loyalty still remains unknown. Research suggests a non-monotonic relationship between store brand loyalty and store loyalty, positive up to a certain store brand loyalty level, after which it becomes negative. Current arguments recommend this relationship may relate to the competitive positioning of store brands, especially their price-quality positioning. .....

Value Investing: Understanding Economic Moats | Pat Dorsey CFA

30:30
What is an economic moat? Pat Dorsey, CFA, Managing Partner at Dorsey Asset Management, and previously Head of Equity Research at Morning Star shares his thoughts on how economic moats can help the aspiring value investor. He expounded the significance of a moat in his book, “The Little Book That Builds Wealth” A moat is a structural sustainable quality that is inherent to the business and that protects its competitive advantage and hence its profitability. Absence a moat, competition destroys profitability. Moats manifest themselves in pricing power. Oracle is a great example of a company that has exercised its moat in pricing and the stock has benefited immensely. Pat Dorsey also asserts that a moat is also a protection against bad management. He cautions that a cool piece of technology is not a moat, he also asserts that being BIG is not a moat. Pat Dorsey explores four categories of economic moats. 1. Intangible Assets such as Brands, Patents, Licenses and Approvals. Brands are increases your willingness to pay, (Apple, Berkshire Hathaway, Tiffany) or decreases search costs (Coco-Cola, Heinz, Wriggleys). Pat Dorsey suggests that brands that change consumer behavior are valuable. In summary a brand is valuable if they deliver a consistent or aspirational experience. 2. Switching Cost A business with a switching cost moat is secured by the fact that the benefits of switching to a competitor's products or services are outweighed by the disadvantages of sticking with the company. Think of Elevators, Databases. 3. The Network Effect. 4. Cost Advantages A process based cost advantage is one which allows a company to deliver a product or service at a lower cost. Unfortunately, they can be copied. Scale is a much better cost advantage. Think of UPS. UPS has a large scale of distribution in the US which protected them when German based DHL tried to come in and compete with them. There are also niche based advantages where the market is so small that it can only facilitate two or three companies. The entrant of another player would greatly reduce profit margins for each company making it less profitable for all. 8 Things to Do BEFORE You Start Selling on Amazon (Tips for New Amazon Sellers)

10:33
Learn the 8 things to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon & create an Amazon store. ►► How to Make 10k/Month Online ebook: http://wholesaleted.com/4-step ***VIDEOS REFERENCED*** How to Create an Amazon Account: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZjFjJNWLis How to Start an Aliexpress Dropshipping Store with No Money: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CWrd2gdTIs Amazon Restricted Categories: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3Idp0CuKSg First thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Get an Amazon Pro Merchant Account Why? Because having an Amazon Pro Merchant Account is a necessary prerequisite to winning the Buy Box. Winning this is crucial as a new seller for two reasons: 1) About 80% of sales are made using the Buy Box - so not winning this means you miss out on crucial sales opportunities. 2) When you are the featured seller in the Buy Box the number of reviews you have are not featured, so it means that new sellers won’t be discriminated against for having little-to-no reviews by buyers. Even though it costs money compared to opening a free seller account, I strongly recommend it because you’ll make more money with one. Second thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Have the documents ready when applying for an Amazon account When creating an Amazon account, you will need the following documents: 1) Photos of a national ID (like a passport or a drivers license). 2) A bank statement with your address on it. So before you start an account, take photos and download your latest bank statement and upload these documents when Amazon asks for them. Third thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Act fast - DON’T wait! Amazon is regularly changing their requirements. For example… * In 2014 they changed Personal Care into a restricted category. * In 2016 they made it so new FBA sellers couldn’t send in their first shipment during the 4th quarter. * And in 2017, they changed it so you need to upload proof of ID documents during the account creation process. The sooner you get started, the easier it’ll be. Fourth thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Pick your Amazon business model There are several types of business models to pursue when opening your Amazon store (private labeling, wholesale selling, dropshipping & retail arbitrage). Before you open your Amazon business, you need to pick the right one that meets your skillset and access to resources. For example, private labeling has the advantage of being very hands-off. But it requires a large upfront investment. While a dropshipping business takes more time to manage, but it requires a lot less money to get started. Weigh up the pros & cons. Fifth thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Get a credit card (or a debit card) When you sell on Amazon you need to pay selling fees. To pay these, Amazon requires you have either a credit card or a debit card. You cannot use a Payoneer card or a prepaid debit card. If you don’t have this, then consider opening an Aliexpress dropshipping store on your own website. Sixth thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Figure out a plan to manage your cash flow Don’t be afraid by the word “cash flow.” All we mean is that you need to have a plan for how you are going to pay for the items you are going to sell. Why? Because Amazon holds your money for 2 weeks as a new seller. This means: 1) If you’re dropshipping, you need to have money to use in the meantime to order the items the customer has purchased. 2) If you’re private labeling, it’s prudent to have money set aside to replace inventory if your product gets super-successful super-fast. While you could save up hundreds to thousands of dollars, the easiest way to manage this is with a credit card. If you don’t have a credit card then I recommend working on your credit score and making it a priority to get one. Seventh thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Check if the category you want to sell in is restricted Some item categories on Amazon are unrestricted (ungated categories) and you can sell in them without submitting an application (e.g. home & gardening). But some categories are restricted (gated categories). Some categories are very easy to get unrestricted in (like clothing & accessories) but some are more difficult (e.g. food & grocery). Be sure to check before getting started. Eighth thing to do BEFORE you start selling on Amazon: Set aside time each day/week to manage/grow your Amazon business. Make sure you set aside time each day to fulfill orders & answer emails/questions. And set aside time each week to grow your business. For many this will be working on weekends. Doing this can be challenging: But it’s a right of passage that most business owners go through. So don’t get discouraged: The rewards are well worth it!

Face Oils - What's Best For Your Skin Type?

11:36
This is the second part to my Skincare Chat about Moisturizers and it’s all about Facial Oils. These are powerful ingredients that really require a good understanding of which work for what skin type. They are supremely nourishing but some facial oils can be drying and straight up astringent, while others are pore clogging or cause skin irritation, sometimes severe. Continue to keep in mind that we all have different skin and the ability to tolerate different ingredients. The categories are SIMPLE guidelines for you. A lot of these oils have multiple uses and fall under more than one category like the oils in the anti-aging one which can also be for dry skin, oily skin etc. Since my skin can only tolerate certain oils that many others cannot, rather than featuring the oils I use, I would rather explain what is out there for all skin types. This video is purely to help you recognise ingredients in other oil blends out there or moisturisers. Hopefully this can give you a simple guideline to the oils we hear about and see the most in formulations. If you’re using severely drying treatments like Retin A, Peels, astringent or prescription acne treatments, the right oils can really return the proper moisture back into your skin. Many oils are also great at reducing inflammation and irritation. I can’t stress enough that when buying oils, you are getting what you pay for. Some oils like Argan are so labor intensive, if you find a cheap bottle out there, it’s over processed and diluted with cheap fillers. These fabulous oils are in a lot of the products I’ve reviewed and mentioned in previous videos so stay tuned, I will do another video with my favourite oil products. What is PRIVATE LABEL? What does PRIVATE LABEL mean? PRIVATE LABEL meaning, definition & explanation

What is PRIVATE LABEL? What does PRIVATE LABEL mean? PRIVATE LABEL meaning - PRIVATE LABEL definition - PRIVATE LABEL explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Private-label products or services, also known as "phantom brands", are typically those manufactured or provided by one company for offer under another company's brand. Private-label goods and services are available in a wide range of industries from food to cosmetics to web hosting. They are often positioned as lower-cost alternatives to regional, national or international brands, although recently some private label brands have been positioned as "premium" brands to compete with existing "name" brands. Growing market shares and increasing variety of private label consumer packaged goods is now a global phenomenon. However, private label market shares exhibit widespread diversity across international markets and product categories. Empirical research on private label products has been of substantial interest to both marketing academics and managers. Considerable work has been done on well-defined areas of private-label research such as private-label brand strategy, market performance of private-label products, competition with national brands, market structure, and buyer behavior. For example, Richelieu Foods is a private-label company producing frozen pizza, salad dressing, marinades, and condiments for other companies, including Hy-Vee, Aldi, Save-A-Lot, Sam's Club, Hannaford Brothers Co., BJ's Wholesale Club (Earth's Pride brand) and Shaw's Supermarkets (Culinary Circle brand). Another example is the Cott Corporation, which manufactures private-label beverages for supermarket chains. McBride plc is a Europe-based provider of private-label household and personal care products. The Private Label Manufacturer's Association (PLMA) in the United States categorizes private-label manufacturers into four categories: 1. Large national brand manufacturers that utilize their expertise and excess plant capacity to supply store brands. 2. Small, quality manufacturers who specialize in particular product lines and concentrate on producing store brands almost exclusively. Often these companies are owned by corporations that also produce national brands. 3. Major retailers and wholesalers that own their own manufacturing facilities and provide store-brand products for themselves. 4. Regional brand manufacturers that produce private-label products for specific markets.

I am making this video because I see so many music teachers on the facebook Music Teachers page ask for guidance on which ukuleles to buy. I, too, seek this guidance and have a hard time finding some tested results. I was there too! After spending HOURS reading reviews, I ordered a few ukuleles. As my program grew, I ordered more ukuleles from different brands and they have been pretty good to my students and I so far. Keep in mind that I teach 320 students and 300 of them play the ukuleles Monday - Friday, so my ukuleles go through many little hands and have to stand the test of time. ********** These are the two ukuleles I will be avoiding in the future: -Ala Moana -Mahalo Maybe these ukuleles would make great first-time ukuleles or beginner ukuleles, but they aren't the best fit for my music program. The tuning is inconsistent and the note produced varies GREATLY when the students apply more pressure on the string. ********** Ukulele Chord Reference Book http://amzn.to/2lcaGdj ********** Ukuleles I would purchase again: Cordoba Concert Ukulele $99 on Amazon http://amzn.to/2kVSqWB Cordoba Concert Ukulele Bundle $119 on Amazon http://amzn.to/2kVQGwy Oscar Schmidt Concert Ukulele $60 http://amzn.to/2kBg12E Oscar Schmidt Bundle $90 on Amazon http://amzn.to/2kBiCd0 Kaka Ukuleles $70-$90 on Amazon Soprano, Concert, Tenor http://amzn.to/2kMxxfE ********** Ukulele Stickers Video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nqLEE-ztXw ********** Download the chord chart reference book I created! http://amzn.to/2le8aDv ********** Background music: Daily Beetle by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Source: http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/index.html?isrc=USUAN1500025 Artist: http://incompetech.com/ ********** S N A P C H A T plazi I N S T A G R A M http://www.instagram.com/plazi F A C E B O O K http://www.facebook.com/bernadetteteachesmusic T E A C H E R S P A Y T E A C H E R S https://tinyurl.com/hfy2c35 E M A I L [email protected] WRITE TO ME HERE Bernadette Etcheverry PSC 482 BOX 28 FPO, AP 96362 Hi! What is CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT? What does CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT mean?

What is CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT? What does CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT mean? CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT meaning - CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT definition - CUSTOMER ENGAGEMENT explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Customer engagement is a business communication connection between an external stakeholder (consumer) and an organization (company or brand) through various channels of correspondence. This connection can be a reaction, interaction, effect or overall customer experience, which takes place online and offline. The term can also be used to define customer-to-customer correspondence regarding a communication, product, service or brand. However, the latter dissemination originates from a business-to-consumer interaction resonated at a subconscious level. Online customer engagement is qualitatively different from offline engagement as the nature of the customer’s interactions with a brand, company and other customers differ on the internet. Discussion forums or blogs, for example, are spaces where people can communicate and socialise in ways that cannot be replicated by any offline interactive medium. Online customer engagement is a social phenomenon that became mainstream with the wide adoption of the internet in the late 1990s, which has expanded the technical developments in broadband speed, connectivity and social media. These factors enable customer behaviour to regularly engage in online communities revolving, directly or indirectly, around product categories and other consumption topics. This process leads to a customer’s positive engagement with the company or offering, as well as the behaviours associated with different degrees of customer engagement. Marketing practices aim to create, stimulate or influence customer behaviour, which places conversions into a more strategic context and is premised on the understanding that a focus on maximising conversions can, in some circumstances, decrease the likelihood of repeat conversions. Although customer advocacy has always been a goal for marketers, the rise of online user generated content has directly influenced levels of advocacy. Customer engagement targets long-term interactions, encouraging customer loyalty and advocacy through word-of-mouth. Although customer engagement marketing is consistent both online and offline, the internet is the basis for marketing efforts. Leveraging customer contributions is an important source of competitive advantage – whether through advertising, user generated product reviews, customer service FAQs, forums where consumers can socialise with one another or contribute to product development. In store, or offline customer engagement is best leveraged by associates’ extensive brand and product knowledge, and the digital access that supports it. Equipped with a tablet that also delivers store and sales training, educated on-floor associates become brand ambassadors who can show consumers high-definition product imagery and video to help cross-sell, up-sell, grow relationships and foster loyalty.
