How designers turn inspiration into fashion collections

05:11
How designers turn inspiration into fashion collections: In my previous videos, we talked about how to create a fashion collection. We will do more exercises now to better understand the steps of any collection. Apart from the text part of any documentation - the phase when you read a lot about the topic you are interested in- there is the visual documentation. In this case, I took another image from a book of mine and use it as a starting point for some sketches. How to actually get inspired by an image? Try to decompose the image into elements. See what are the definitory elements that compose the image. In this case, you could use elements like: the pattern with stripes, the color, the sleeves and the lower part of the costume, the structures you see in the area of eyes and those elements near the ears. Use them separately, combine them, use them as modules: big or small, rotate them and so on.I used the shapes near the ears and I placed them in the center of my costume. I imagined those shapes will have holes inside, so that you can see the skin or the layers of my costume. You can use the elements and place them in other parts of your costume. For example, some sleeves could become scarfs or you could undo them and sew them again in stripes to create a rhythm to your future garment. If you used a lot of volume for the upper part of your costume, try to simplify the rest, there is no need to over-work the whole costume. As about the drawing style, use details and a black marker to add the contrast here and there, where you feel the need. For the second drawing, turn the page upside down and get inspired. Even if the elements are the same, they position will inspire you to see even more in the photo, to discover inspiration there where you did not know it exist. See how used the "let's say glasses" from my source of inspiration and used them as earrings.Mix the elements and play with them in unusual combinations. When sketching, there is no need to think of the human body. You can draw it only when it helps, if not, the costume will be enough. Use simple lines and add color because this will help you visualize the outfit. Also, write down your ideas regarding the colors or textures to be used in the final work. And now sit back and see how I used another image to finish my small collection inspired by African art.As I previously mentioned, try to really sketch after the photos I used and send me your collection by email. My email is: [email protected] Waiting for your sketches and I will come back with a feed-back.Thank you and please don't forget to subscribe if you liked my video.

Fashion your future: Think more like a fashion designer | Suzi Vaughan | TEDxQUT

12:26
We live in times of unprecedented, disruptive change and uncertainty and most people find it challenging to thrive in those circumstances. If ‘design thinking’ is the new black, then thinking like a fashion design may just be the next big thing! This talk takes the idea of design thinking and translates it into a series of very practical tips that you can employ yourself, every day to help you think more optimistically in times of uncertainty and ambiguity. Professor Suzi Vaughan has settled (for now) in Brisbane, Australia having studied, lived and worked in Europe and Asia. After graduating from St Martins School of Art in London with a Ba Hons in Fashion, she started her professional career as a fashion designer, later moving into fashion education. Since 2011 she has been part of the executive team of a large Australian university. With over thirty years’ experience of design practice and teaching, she has become an advocate for the power and potential of design thinking. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

How and where to find inspiration for your designs

03:22
How and where to find inspiration for your designs I received a lot of comments and emails regarding my new series of videos. I saw that you are interested in the creativity part of a fashion collection and also in the inspiration coming from plants and flowers of all kind. When starting the research, try to find plants that are exotic or uncommon, let's say. Try to skip the tulipes, roses or plants that are quite symmetric or boring or not rich in details. Don't get me wrong, any plant can be beautiful, but when wanting to get inspired, we need more than that.See now what kind of plants inspired me in this floral collection. And now let's get to the creative part. Use simple lines, sketch with transparent layers. I usually start with the pencil but if you feel more comfortable with another tool, go for it. I try to capture as much details as possible. The mistake everybody does is the fact that just looking once at your source of inspiration and then thinking to create something, won't work. You need to constantly observe the details and sketch them and adapt them to your costume. Try to understand how they were made, how th plant evolved and how those beautiful shapes were generated. Then use 2-3 layers of colors that you will mix to create the volume or the dark and shadow parts of your outfit. When you are satisfied, just come over and press harder to obtain black lines that will re-shape the costume. Think of that: when you will later on see the drawings, you should immediately know what was the primary source of inspiration and what you intened with your drawing. The drawing should be as accurate as possible so that later on you will be able to give it to somebody who will actually produce the costume to be worn. For the second sketch, I was inspired by the volumes of the plant you see near my drawing. I kept almost the same colors as the originals and also I added the details that remind the source of inspiration. Now it back and enjoy my drawings! Thank you for watching, and, as always, please subscribe to my channel if you like my videos! Thank you for all your comments, shares and likes and as always, if you need my advice, write me on [email protected]

What Does it Take to Be A Fashion Designer?

06:17
Click for more: http://ww2.kqed.org/artschool/ Oakland high school student Zachary Fernandez made it to the finals on the first season of Project Runway Junior, then headed straight back to Oakland School of the Arts to continue his education as a designer. His newest collection, Kathmandu, was inspired by recovery efforts in Nepal after the devastating 2015 earthquake. Art School followed Fernandez's process as he sketched, sourced fabric, and designed his new project, revealed at a culminating fashion show in spring 2016. Hi, my name is Zachary Fernandez and I'm currently a fashion student. So I am starting my Kathmandu 2016 collection. My collection's gonna be debuting at my school fashion show, and so I have little under seven weeks to get this all put together. So our school assignment was to pick a city that we wanted to be inspired by for this collection. I ended with Kathmandu, Nepal, all of the trouble that they went through last year was really inspiring and I was able to take those ideas of imbalance and the destruction of culture and apply that to this new collection. These are the pieces that I ended up designing. They're ever-changing and they kind of just are always in flux. My sketching process involves a lot of images, a lot of mixed medias, I like to do collages, watercolors, acrylic paste, it's a real reflection of what my mind looks like. Here you have the final sketches that I've done. The sketching process for me is really a major step between just ideas and kind of this fantasy world that I've created in my mind to really functional wearable pieces. Fabric sourcing is one of my favorite things to do. It's really like a group activity, like meet a couple of friends, we'll just go, we'll explore the city, we'll get inspiration. So I'm looking for like a very pale blue that's almost like very silverish, and then I'm gonna be looking for a very deep, rust orange color. Okay, so I need to find this, but more grayish blue. The fabric store is one of those places that you go in with one idea and one concept and one thought, and you come out with like 500 more. This is it. - This is it! - This is it. - [Girl] Dude! - Hey! Yes! So I spend the majority of my time draping and it's definitely a part that will make or break a piece. I take a piece of muslin, which is just a really basic blend fabric, and I started sculpting it to the dress form. And then those mock-ups that I make of the dress form are then fitted to the model, and sometimes I try them on a model, I'm like, this is hideous, I don't know why, it just overpowers her or something happens and that leads to even better ideas and even more just, creativeness. When you design while you create, I just think it takes so much longer and you like pressure yourself so much more. So, my design mind is turned off. And it's just about sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing. So after I finish draping, I take a part of that mockup and I totally seam rip it and I re-pattern it, and then I cut out of my real fabric. It's always really nerve-wracking 'cause a lot of times the fabric's all that you have, either the budget doesn't allow for you to get more fabric, or there's simply not anymore left. It has this like box-like structure in it. The box is actually lined with horse-hair so that it can kind of take the shape and that's why I'm kind of trying to like manipulate it right now 'cause it just takes on whatever shape you really need it to. The show, oh the show. Six days, and I'm still cutting up fabric like, I don't think that's normal. There's always going to be that last minute hurry up and finish like state of being. I have a picture in my mind about how this is supposed to go, but who knows if it actually go that way. I think that there can be a lot of different ways to read the look. Obviously you look for like the main things like color, silhouette, is this an evening piece, is this a day piece and you just kind of put the garment and choose certain categories and that really helps people read fashion out, by the time the piece is on the runway I'm already thinking about a whole new collection and I'm really thinking something totally different, but it doesn't really hit me that these people, for them it's the first time that they've seen this. I've spent months and months planning and sketching and putting it together. If I see all these different things in these pieces, but no one else does, then it's kind of sad, but then it's also part of what makes fashion art, is because people see it in so many different ways. We are in my home, studio, bedroom combination in Berkeley, California. I have this look from Project Runway Junior, which was the first episode, and this look for my most recent collection. They really mean a lot to me 'cause they show how much progress I've made within the last four, five months.

How to create your own fashion collection

03:32
How to create your own fashion collection: When starting sketching for a new collection, first of all you have to make your research. This means you should carefully study all the aspects fo your source of inspiration. Articles, photo collages, images found on Pinterest, Google or books, photos taken in trips or museums, they all should be placed in a journal because later on they will be part of the design process. The design journal is a creative tool that can be accessed anytime. It is an active source of inspiration for any designer and it serves as a creative kit. These are some inspiring images I found in a book about African art and added them to my journal.I photocopied some pages that will help me explain you how one should think when it comes to creativity. First of all, and the simplest way is to get inspired by the Shape. See the exterior shape of this African sculpture and decompose it in details: see the geometric forms, the patterns, the colors, the textures and so on. I will show you each time what inspired me for a particular area in the costume. Don't think if the result will be a dress or a pullover, a skirt or a coat. Simply don't. Just let it flow and feel the image that gives you inspiration. This is what I do. Tools can also inspire you, For example, this thick marker i am using for the lower part of the outfit. Just play and experiment. As you already noticed, I am using different kind of lines and surfaces to create diversity. The image should look interesting in any part you will look. Imagine that each part of your drawing could be a poster hanged on a wall. This is the limit of the creativity and how you should think your costume. Don't be afraid to be spectacular. The sky is the limit. You will have enough time later to reduce it all and to make your outfit look wearable. For the second sketch, I will get the inspiration from the decorative triangles and also from the texture in the lower part of the African sculpture. I like Copic markers especially because they are very wet and they inspire my hand to be free to move all over the page. When a marker is dry, the lines will be edgy and rigid, you will see.I also like the brush edge that allows me to have fine lines and also a flexible hand. My second favorite is Posca white markers. I just love them because they leave beautiful strong lines on dark surfaces like this one. When using markers, make sure to have a spare paper beneath. The markers will go through your white sheet of paper and they might ruin your drawings underneath. Thank you for watching, and please subscribe just to make sure you will be the first to see my new video.

Talking about how to be inspired by other people's work without copying it... Please remember to subscribe! http://bit.ly/1aE5UOT Copying other peoples work to learn from is okay, as long as you don't share it or try to pass it off as your own. But the best way to be inspired by other peoples work is not to copy it directly, but to be influenced by certain pieces of it, and mix it with inspiration from other pieces to create something new. Hope you enjoy the video and that it might help you out if you're learning design, or finding your work looks a little too similar to your influences. Fashion collection inspired by architecture, sculpture and painting

06:47
Fashion collection inspired by architecture, sculpture and painting Hi again! Thank you for leaving me comments on my videos. I am so happy when I receive messages and likes from you guys because this means I am on the right path and I should continue filming my videos. I am so happy that you find them useful and that I see so much interactivity in my channel:) I am almost done with all your comment requests and here we are today, making a special collection for all of you who asked to see an architecture, sculpture and painting inspired collection.I decided to play a little game with you, if you are willing to try it. At the end of each of my videos I will present you up to 10 inspirational pictures on the same topic. For example, this time I will post some architecture, sculptures and modern paintings for you to get inspired. What you will have to do is to make 3 to 5 sketches and send them to me on my email: [email protected] and I will give you a personal feed-back to each of you and then present it on my next video. So, the challenge starts today, and you will have to create 3-5 garments inspired by the pictures at the end of this video. All this, until next Thursday. Waiting for your emails:) And now, let's enjoy the video:) As always, I started by sketching in pencil my fashion sketches. First I searched on Pinterest and Google and I was inspired by some modern buildings and interior decorations. I always search for interesting forms because otherwise, if the form is too simple, the costume will look poor and not attractive, nor interesting. It is nice to create minimalist outfits but for that, I will do another video when finishing these series. So, as I said, try to decompose what you see in small pieces. Is it the structure that inspires you? Or a glass surface of a building? The fact that if you turn upside down the image you will see other things that could inspire? Try them all and play with the source of inspiration. Also, there is no need to explore all these parts in all your drawings. Only one element could be enough but don;t worry, even if you overcrowded a dress, you could always sketch it again and simplify it. I am not interested in the color now because structure is construction is all i need. The color and textures, you can add them later. Going to the next theme, the modern sculpture helped me to imagine big and asymmetric volumes. The holes can be replaced by patterns or folding or they can be left as holes if you want. For the second drawing I was in love with the wrinkles and dynamic forms of the sculpture. I immediately thought of a nice ivory dress exploring the foldings. For the upper part i imagined tridimensional volumes but for the lower part i thought of just using lines to create graphic flat and fake folding. I considered adding volume everywhere could be too much, so I reduce it and left it only in the upper part of my outfit. For the third costume, I said i could use Pierre Soulages abstract paintings. Soulages is a French painter, engraver, and sculptor who was called "the painter of black"- the reasons are obvious, i guess. The stripes inspired me to create a costume by overlapping stripes in multiple directions: diagonals, verticals or horizontals. Going to my next 3 sketches, once again I used an Pierre Soulages painting. I had to add the beautiful blue because this is in fact what a sketch does. If you will look at it in a few years, you should remember even the source of inspiration. I had to capture the blue, so I choose to add colors on this sketch. If you will decide later what colors should have your outfit, there is no need to add it right now. The second outfit was inspired by and abstract sculpture that reminded me of a Romanian sculpture, Ovidiu Maitec. The holes and the organic shapes were something that I had to explore and use. As about the last one, the stretched fibers and draping and also the color inspired me to create a vibrant dress in a fine transparent material. Hope you enjoyed my video and now, see the images for my challenge for next week. Also, if you did not subscribed yet, please do. Thank you and take care:)

Where does inspiration come from? | Fashion | Creative Thinking | Justine Leconte

08:31
How did I come up with the idea of Project #1? Where do I get my inspiration? That is the question I get most often since my website is live – so I wanted to give it a proper answer and discuss the way different designers, from Alexander McQueen to Stella McCartney and Alexander Wang, work themselves. There are 3 groups of creative minds: those how live in the past, those who consider the present and those who look towards the future. And somewhere in the middle, there is me… trying to find the method that will suit me best. If you find this video useful, give me a thumb up, subscribe to this channel and tell more people about it! Clothing designer takes inspiration from her mum and the East End: Vanessa, Londoner #141

03:12
Vanessa Blythe has designed a clothing line called Nina Baker, named after her mother, which she sells in markets across London and in-store in Haringey. Vanessa talks about her love for one-off pieces and her dreams for the future. 1000 LONDONERS This film is part of 1000 Londoners, a five-year digital project which aims to create a digital portrait of a city through 1000 of the people who identify themselves with it. The profile contains a 3 minute film that gives an insight into the life of the Londoner, as well as their personal photos of London and some answers to crucial questions about their views on London life. Over the course of the project we aim to reveal as many facets of the capital as possible, seeing city life from 1000 points of view. www.1000londoners.com www.youtube.com/1000londoners www.facebook.com/1000londoners Twitter: @1000_londoners 1000 Londoners is produced by South London based film production company and social enterprise, Chocolate Films. The filmmakers from Chocolate Films will be both producing the films and providing opportunities to young people and community groups to make their own short documentaries, which will contribute to the 1000 films. Visit www.chocolatefilms.com Transcript: Hackney was a place that, when I was growing up, I couldn't wait to get out of. I hated it, you know. Erm, 15 I left home, and I went abroad and I travelled the world and I caused carnage, in my way, you know. And I ended up coming back here two years ago and really sorting my life out. And I actually love Hackney now. I set up a fashion label called Nina Baker over two years ago, and I named it after my mum, because I put her through a lot of heartache over the years. This is the E5 kimono, different styles, E9 kimono. So it's really inspired around my mum and the east end, and I like that little concept to name it after places in Hackney. This is my baby, it's a one-off piece, and it's £345, and it's sequins and lining. And I love that limited edition feel, so that when someone buys this they're the only person wearing it. But no-one's bought it yet! [laughing] I do markets - Chatsworth Road market is my main one, erm Portobello Road, I go sometimes in the summer, and Sunday Upmarket down Brick Lane. I met my lovely friend Mila, who has this shop in Green Lanes called Freak Chic, and I have a rail here. This is Dirty Dorothy, we had to take her arms off because she keeps getting undressed. She's the star of Freak Chic, she's really cheap. Yeah, cheap and dirty. There's that part of me that's like; Wouldn't it be great if Nina Baker was on everyone's lips. And, you know, I had a whole collection going down London Fashion week, I'd be lying if I never thought about that. But, you know, that's a dream. But dreams do come true because I'm doing this and this was a dream. So now we're going to go to Leytonstone, to my manufacturer Murat. He's got a business there called Face Of London. I'll show you where the magic happens. I can still do the running man! I've still got it at 41. I mean, my favourite part is picking the material. I'm like a kid in a candy shop. So this is my pattern that I use. I don't have all the tools to do it at home, so I come here, cut the material – Say I was gonna make ten pieces, to cut ten pieces it would take me about two hours. And then I'd just hand it over to one of the machinists and they sew it up for me. Well it's going to be really busy this year, very busy, and I just can't wait to get started. Sorry.
