How to prevent a bicep tear? The biceps, the muscles in the front of the upper arm, extend upward to the shoulder and downward to the elbow. A strained biceps, which is actually a tear in the biceps tendon, is an injury that's being reported more frequently than in the past, but the reason isn't clear. And although the tendons can be torn at either end of the muscle, the one that attaches to the shoulder accounts for the vast majority of biceps ruptures, which occurs when the biceps tendon detaches from the bone. It's vulnerable because it goes through the shoulder joint, which is used, and sometimes overused, by athletes in almost every sport. How Torn Biceps Happens The tendon near the elbow is strained or torn when an athlete's arm absorbs an unexpected amount of force (e.g. a skier or snowboarder breaking a fall) or during a forceful pushing motion. The impact causes partial or complete tears in the tendon or muscle tissue, which may already be worn or frayed if the person is over 40. When the tear involves the upper part of the biceps at the shoulder, the result is the same, but it’s more likely to be caused by overuse. In older athletes, a biceps tendon rupture might be associated with a tear in one of the four rotator cuff muscles. Who’s At Risk for Torn Biceps Weightlifters are at high risk because of the load regularly placed on the biceps. Sustaining a torn biceps while performing curls is a classic example of how the injury occurs. Football players, skiers, gymnasts, tennis players, rowers, boxers, wrestlers, and throwers (javelin, shot, discus) are also at higher-than-normal risk of in. Older athletes are more susceptible than younger athletes, and men are more likely to tear the biceps tendon, but that may reflect the number of participants in a sport rather than a genetic or physiological predisposition. Anyone who has had a previously torn biceps injury is more likely to experience a similar injury. Symptoms Sudden pain in the upper arm, but less pain with tears at the shoulder than with those close to the elbow Possible snapping sound Loss of strength Tenderness in the shoulder A bulge in the upper arm or a dent close to the shoulder Bruising from the upper arm to the elbow Difficulty when trying to bend the elbow and rotating the forearm outward Muscle spasms Initial Treatment Apply ice packs for 15-20 minutes, 3-4 times a day for the first 48-72 hours. Moist heat for 15-20, 3-4 times a day after the first 48-72 hours may relieve pain. Avoid any activity that causes shoulder pain or weakness. Aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and naproxen may relieve pain. Complete tears require surgery. Partial tears may heal with more conservative treatment. If a visual defect is present, you should see a doctor. Comeback Strategy For a complete tear in which surgery is needed, return to full sports participation may take 4-6 months. Supervised physical therapy is typically advised. Partial tears usually heal within 3-6 weeks. Resume regular training only when you have normal shoulder and upper arm strength, full range of motion, and no pain. Incorporate these prehab exercises into your warm-up routine: Elbow Range of Motion: It's necessary to restore the normal movement of both the elbow and shoulder prior to returning to activity. To increase flexion, or bending, of the elbow, actively bend your elbow as much as you can. Continue to try and bend your elbow as you use your other hand to help give you extra pressure into the movement. To restore extension, or straightening of the elbow, reach your arm out straight and fire your triceps, the muscle located at the back of your arm. Use your other hand to gently grab your wrist, and pull back until you feel a slight stretch on your forearm and front of upper arm. Tricep Push Downs Supination/Pronation EXOS_physical_therapy How to Treat Torn Biceps Allow for extra warm-up time in cold weather. Don't increase the intensity, duration, or frequency of exercise involving the biceps muscles more than 10 percent a week. Wear sport-specific equipment to protect the arms and shoulders. Get help from a certified strength and conditioning coach to ensure proper lifting technique. Incorporate these prehab and movement prep exercises into your warm-up routine: Squeeze-Release (for grip strength): Squeeze and release a stress ball for 2-3 minutes, every other day. Over-doing this exercise can make symptoms worse. Perform the exercise in a manner that doesn't cause pain. Wrist Rotation (for supination/pronation strength): Hold a light weight in one hand. Turn your palm up to the ceiling, then down to the ground. Repeat on each side, three sets of 10, every other day. 4-Way Forearm Tricep Push Downs Supination/Pronation Handwalks #calumvonmoger

That couldn’t be further from the truth. The shape of your biceps may be influenced by your parents and your genetic code but that is because it is dictated by the length of your muscle bellies and your attachments. The size of your biceps however is always going to be determined by your effort, in and out of the gym. In this video, I show you the major difference between the influence that genetics can play on your biceps size and shape. By debunking the popular finger test for biceps size potential, I aim to give hope to all those who have been discouraged at one time or another by their failure of that test. I show you that despite what you may perceive to be a poor result on that test, there are things you can do in your training to influence your biceps through effort. If you aren’t familiar with the biceps finger test it goes like this. People say that in order to determine the ultimate size of your biceps you will want to flex your arm to ninety degrees (as if you are making a muscle for somebody). Place as many fingers as you can in the space just past the end of your biceps and the crook of your elbow. You do not want to let your fingers overlap each other. They should be able to sit side by side comfortably and fill the space. Rumor has it that if you can fit any more than one single finger in this space, you are doomed to have bad biceps. You simply do not have long enough attachments to either have good looking biceps or a bicep that is of any substantial size or development. If you can fit three fingers in there, it is said that you are even worse off than if you have a two finger fill. What is actually being determined here is simply the length of your tendon as compared to your muscle belly. A larger spacing is due to the fact that you have shorter muscle bellies. That said, a shorter biceps is capable of developing a shape with a much more prominent peak! This is something that most guys who train their biceps actually seek out. On the other hand, a biceps that allows for a smaller amount of fingers that fit in the groove will represent a larger muscle belly. Here you would find a bicep whose shape is fuller. That said, again while the width may be more substantial the peak is not. Either way, you are not doomed by the results of your test. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. It should look to educate you as to what you may want to focus more on in your biceps workouts and training to help overcome your deficits. Bump up the width of your biceps with more hammer curls and spider curls. Command more of a peak with exercises that hit the long head like the inclined dumbbell curls and curls done with your hands narrow and your elbows close to your sides. Grow big arms while building ripped muscle everywhere… http://athleanx.com/x/ultimate-arms-in-6-weeks Having biceps that don’t respond to normal training and resist arm growth is actually pretty common. The reason for this however is pretty straight forward and not so difficult to fix. In this video, I show you the most common reason for biceps that won’t grow and give you three ways to fix it in your training regardless of whether you use dumbbells, bands or cables in your biceps workouts. First you have to start with an understanding of the function of the biceps muscle. With attachments above and below the elbow, the biceps brachii muscle is responsible for flexing or bending the elbow. That said, that isn’t everything it does. By attaching to the radius in the forearm, the biceps is also a strong supinator of the forearm. In fact, in order to get a complete contraction of the biceps you have to be sure that you are supinating your forearm fully. The mistake most people make when it comes to their biceps workout and bicep training is that they never properly overload the supination function of the bicep. Sure, you may be supinating during your exercises but are you setting up the movements so that you are creating additional overload in your biceps when you do this? Likely not. In fact, you may find that in order to do the things I’m showing you here that you have to decrease the weight that you normally use for your biceps exercises. That is ok. The most important thing is that in order to get your biceps to start growing, you have to be willing to do this to put the overload on the full function of the muscle. If you are using dumbbells for dumbbell curls, you would shift your hand / grip position to get this right. Instead of balancing the dumbbell in the middle of your hand you want to shift your thumb and index finger all the way to the far end of the handle. From, here, gently wrap the remaining three fingers around the bell. The key is the grip being handled predominantly by those two fingers and that the dumbbell now tilts downward in your hand. In order to overcome the downward tilt of the dumbbell you have to supinate your wrist. By weighting this, you are now overloading the supination component and getting a better workout for your biceps. The same can be done with bands and cables as well. For the bands, you would place the resistance band between your index and middle fingers. From here, lay the band across your palm. This once again creates a torque that is needed to be overcome in order to help you build bigger biceps. Regardless of which piece of equipment you use to build bigger biceps, the key is that you will start building them because you’ve stopped avoiding one of the main two functions of the biceps. A muscle must be overloaded in all planes in order to maximally develop it. I went to another health club and got on a scale and saw I was 155 pounds. This was more than I weighed when I gave birth to my daughter. It was harder to get the weight off after 40, but I managed. Then I turned 45 and it got even harder. For two years, I was not overweight, but not happy with my appearance. I no longer fit into my shorts and jeans and took to wearing elastic skirts all of the time to hide the excess weight. I would take some of the weight off, but then during the winter months, especially over the holiday season, it would creep back up. After the last holiday season, I found that I was up to 145, mostly due to eating foods that were delicious, but were no good for me. A sedentary lifestyle that we often have over the winter months also played into this fact. This time, however, I decided to do some investigating into weight loss and see which plans worked best. Naturally, I wanted to take off as much weight as possible in as little time as possible. I was able to lose 10 pounds in 10 days by using some of the tips in one of ebook I bought. Through diet and exercise, I then took off the remaining 9 pounds that was a bit more than my weight loss goal and now fit into my shorts.
