How to Stretch Your Biceps (FEEL IT INSTANTLY!)

Muscles left unstretched tend to lose their capacity for maximal growth. In the case of the biceps, we tend to hold them in a partially flexed position all day long through the activities that we commonly do. If we are on the phone or at the computer, the elbows remain bent, which prevents the biceps from experiencing full length. In this video, I show you the right way to stretch your biceps so that you can overcome this limitation and start adding serious size to your arms from your hard training. The first step to stretching your biceps out is to obviously straighten the elbow. With the main role of the bicep to flex the elbow, you will want to get that straight to put the biceps on stretch. Next, this muscle functions to supinate the forearm. You can actually see this yourself by simply twisting your forearm over and back and watch the biceps flex and relax. To stretch the biceps, you’ll want to pronate or turn your forearm down towards the ground with the elbow extended or straightened. Next, you will want to put your arm back behind your body. This part is the one that often goes overlooked. The biceps, because of the attachment of the long head in the shoulder, will flex the arm forward and lift the shoulder. Therefore in order to fully stretch out the biceps you need to be sure that you extend the arm. From here, you can intensify the stretch on your biceps by actively contracting the triceps. Via the principle of reciprocal inhibition, you can neurologically turn off the muscle by contracting the muscle on the opposite side of the joint. In this case, that is the triceps. This activation of the triceps will allow the biceps to be more relaxed and therefore more susceptible to the stretch you are trying to place upon them. Finally, with a slight lean away and to the side of the arm that you are stretching, you can put one last additional bit of tension on the muscle. This acts by spreading the distance between the attachment of the biceps in the glenoid from the position of the bicipital groove on the upper arm. This small but important tweak on the movement further intensifies the stretch that you’ll feel on your biceps as you do this. As always, you’ll want to hold this stretch for about 45-60 seconds to get the benefits of it. With this being a passive stretch, it is best to perform them at night before going to bed. That said, since your arms will tend to get tight from being posturally shortened throughout the day, you can do this at regular intervals to help loosen them up. In this video, I’m going to show you the two biggest reasons why I believe your bicep size is not what you want it to be. Between the number of times that you are knowingly and unknowingly training them to the more important concept of hitting them with fewer exercises but more techniques. First we should talk about the amount of times per week that you are training your biceps. Many people think that more is better however that is not the case, especially in the instance of such a small muscle group. The use of direct biceps training is effective in building bigger arms but you must still include all of the accessory work they get through exercises that bend the elbow (a key function of the biceps). When you think about all of the back exercises that bend the elbow like barbell rows, pulldowns, pullups, chinups, one armed rows, etc you quickly realize how much extra work that arms are getting even on non bicep days. That doesn’t mean that the volume isn’t still accruing and becoming something that you must consider in your overall ability to recover. If you are performing a push, pull, legs training split at the moment and performing each of these two times per week then any direct biceps training is going to also wind up adding significant volume to your biceps. The mistake is often to continue to add more and more when you are trying to force a change in muscle size. The right thing to do is to first step back and take away volume and frequency and monitor how your body responds. Most often, as a natural lifter you will find that dropping this back is exactly what your body needs in order to be able to grow and resume your gains. That said, one of the other big keys to getting bigger biceps (or any other muscle for that matter) is progressive overload. Now this most often comes in the form of adding weight to the exercises that you are doing. Some will also attempt to simply add new exercises as a form of stimulus overload that keeps the gains coming. In the case of the biceps however, the variety of bicep exercises is extremely limited due to the nature of the elbow joint. Given that this is a hinge joint that functions primarily to flex and extend the elbow, the different variations of bicep exercises often look the same; they are all some form of a curl. Whether it be preacher curls, concentration curls, barbell curls or seated incline dumbbell curls, they are all just bending the elbow. This is why switching exercises is often not enough of a stimulus to promote new growth. It is here that the switching in of techniques is far more effective. I demonstrate three in particular for you in this video. I show you the In10sity technique for using heavier weights on your curls and getting more high intensity reps completed in a workout. The sliced reps technique for getting more time under tension and peak contraction. And finally, the arc variation technique that allows you to train to and through failure by manipulating the moment arm of the biceps as you fatigue. Grow big arms while building ripped muscle everywhere… http://athleanx.com/x/ultimate-arms-in-6-weeks Having biceps that don’t respond to normal training and resist arm growth is actually pretty common. The reason for this however is pretty straight forward and not so difficult to fix. In this video, I show you the most common reason for biceps that won’t grow and give you three ways to fix it in your training regardless of whether you use dumbbells, bands or cables in your biceps workouts. First you have to start with an understanding of the function of the biceps muscle. With attachments above and below the elbow, the biceps brachii muscle is responsible for flexing or bending the elbow. That said, that isn’t everything it does. By attaching to the radius in the forearm, the biceps is also a strong supinator of the forearm. In fact, in order to get a complete contraction of the biceps you have to be sure that you are supinating your forearm fully. The mistake most people make when it comes to their biceps workout and bicep training is that they never properly overload the supination function of the bicep. Sure, you may be supinating during your exercises but are you setting up the movements so that you are creating additional overload in your biceps when you do this? Likely not. In fact, you may find that in order to do the things I’m showing you here that you have to decrease the weight that you normally use for your biceps exercises. That is ok. The most important thing is that in order to get your biceps to start growing, you have to be willing to do this to put the overload on the full function of the muscle. If you are using dumbbells for dumbbell curls, you would shift your hand / grip position to get this right. Instead of balancing the dumbbell in the middle of your hand you want to shift your thumb and index finger all the way to the far end of the handle. From, here, gently wrap the remaining three fingers around the bell. The key is the grip being handled predominantly by those two fingers and that the dumbbell now tilts downward in your hand. In order to overcome the downward tilt of the dumbbell you have to supinate your wrist. By weighting this, you are now overloading the supination component and getting a better workout for your biceps. The same can be done with bands and cables as well. For the bands, you would place the resistance band between your index and middle fingers. From here, lay the band across your palm. This once again creates a torque that is needed to be overcome in order to help you build bigger biceps. Regardless of which piece of equipment you use to build bigger biceps, the key is that you will start building them because you’ve stopped avoiding one of the main two functions of the biceps. A muscle must be overloaded in all planes in order to maximally develop it. That couldn’t be further from the truth. The shape of your biceps may be influenced by your parents and your genetic code but that is because it is dictated by the length of your muscle bellies and your attachments. The size of your biceps however is always going to be determined by your effort, in and out of the gym. In this video, I show you the major difference between the influence that genetics can play on your biceps size and shape. By debunking the popular finger test for biceps size potential, I aim to give hope to all those who have been discouraged at one time or another by their failure of that test. I show you that despite what you may perceive to be a poor result on that test, there are things you can do in your training to influence your biceps through effort. If you aren’t familiar with the biceps finger test it goes like this. People say that in order to determine the ultimate size of your biceps you will want to flex your arm to ninety degrees (as if you are making a muscle for somebody). Place as many fingers as you can in the space just past the end of your biceps and the crook of your elbow. You do not want to let your fingers overlap each other. They should be able to sit side by side comfortably and fill the space. Rumor has it that if you can fit any more than one single finger in this space, you are doomed to have bad biceps. You simply do not have long enough attachments to either have good looking biceps or a bicep that is of any substantial size or development. If you can fit three fingers in there, it is said that you are even worse off than if you have a two finger fill. What is actually being determined here is simply the length of your tendon as compared to your muscle belly. A larger spacing is due to the fact that you have shorter muscle bellies. That said, a shorter biceps is capable of developing a shape with a much more prominent peak! This is something that most guys who train their biceps actually seek out. On the other hand, a biceps that allows for a smaller amount of fingers that fit in the groove will represent a larger muscle belly. Here you would find a bicep whose shape is fuller. That said, again while the width may be more substantial the peak is not. Either way, you are not doomed by the results of your test. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. It should look to educate you as to what you may want to focus more on in your biceps workouts and training to help overcome your deficits. Bump up the width of your biceps with more hammer curls and spider curls. Command more of a peak with exercises that hit the long head like the inclined dumbbell curls and curls done with your hands narrow and your elbows close to your sides. My biceps look super huge in the video but it looks nothing like that in real its just beacuse my arms are pressing against my body hahaha Just so you know why i have my feet up while i was doing the close grip bench press was to support my lower back from my injury . It's about more than looking good in the mirror, although it'll likely make your curves pop. Lifting weights can transform you from the inside out and change things for the better. I spend a lot much time coaching women on how to change their bodies, but I focus on more than their physiques. I teach them how to improve on the inside to reflect their lifestyle changes. Lifting has changed my body and life for the better, and I want all of you to experience the same. Here's a quick rundown of the key reasons you should be lifting, too. REASON 1 TO BOOST YOUR CONFIDENCE The number one reason women should lift is for the confidence boost. I have so much more confidence now in my mid-30s than I ever had growing up. When I first started training, I'd freeze when I walked into a gym. If I wasn't with my husband or a friend, I had no idea what to do. Even if I knew what machine to use, I was worried people were watching me or that I wouldn't know how to adjust the settings. Every doubt was running through my head, and I didn't have the confidence I needed to get in a great workout. Now that I've been lifting for years, I feel like I own the gym when I walk in. I love that feeling. It's taken some experience, but if you just keep going to the gym and keep lifting, you'll build up your confidence. You're going to walk into the gym, use the equipment you need, and kill your reps and your sets. And you know what? So what if people are watching? They probably want tips or want to know how you're doing what you're doing. Nothing feels better than when you're in the gym with that kind of confidence. Outside of the gym, I can't even go grocery shopping in a tank top without women and men stopping me, complimenting me, and asking what I do. It's just really neat to be able to say, "I lift." It's as simple as that—I go the gym, and I lift. It's so rewarding to put on a dress or your favorite pair of jeans and have those curves. You feel good about your body and walk out there in the world knowing that you look and feel great. REASON 2 TO EAT MORE CARBS Who doesn't love to eat? When you lift, you get to eat all the carbs. Well, maybe not all the carbs you want, but a lot of carbs. If you're lifting with intensity at the gym, you have to eat. You won't have a successful workout if you aren't properly fueled. Still, a lot of women are scared of carbs and wonder if upping their intake will cause them to gain weight. I have good news for you: It won't if you're lifting with intensity and have consistency in the gym. You need those carbs to change your physique. So, if you have carbs all day long on a leg day, your body will use up every drop of that to grow and maintain muscle. That's a pretty darned good reason to eat carbs and lift weights. REASON 3 TO SCULPT ALL THE RIGHT CURVES Lifting weights is going to put muscle on your body, change your shape, and change the way you fit into your clothes. Cardio alone is not. A lot of women get caught up in spending hours in the gym on the treadmill. Don't get me wrong—it's important to do cardio. I do cardio, but lifting weights has definitely added curves I didn't know could exist on my body. My butt and glutes have grown. I have awesome legs, and I'm not scared to show them off. I love wearing my favorite pair of jeans or just my leggings—especially when I can see my developed hamstrings peaking through. REASON 4 TO BURN MORE CALORIES The best part of lifting is the afterburn affect, or EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption). When you do cardio only, you're burning fat but not really building muscle. When that cardio session ends, the fat burning stops. When you lift weights with intensity, you're burning fat and calories, too. Your metabolism rate has increased, and you're burning calories all day long—even after your gym session is over and you're home resting. I don't know about you, but I'm really into burning fat while I sleep. The more muscles you have, the more calories you burn. It's as simple as that. REASON 5 TO STRENGTHEN YOUR BONES While you might not be concerned with it just yet, women are at higher risk than men for osteoporosis, which means a higher risk for fracturing and breaking bones. A great way to minimize that risk is by lifting weights with intensity. I don't mean a few reps here and there on machines and a little circuit training; I mean intensity. Get into the gym—you can use machines, you can use cables, you can use dumbbells, or you can get into the squat rack—whatever is comfortable for you. Just lift weights, and whatever you do, go hard. You will build muscle mass, increase your bone density, and increase your strength, which will help you later in life.

How to Know That Your Left Arm Pain Is Heart Related Or Not Pain in the left arm can be due to many conditions, ranging from run of the mill muscle pain to a severe heart attack. Abnormalities of the skin, soft tissue, nerves, bones, joints and blood vessels of the arm can all cause pain. There are a number of factors to consider in order to determine whether your left arm pain is heart-related or not. Evaluate the quality of your pain. Pain that relates to a heart attack most often feels like a pressure, or squeezing, sensation. It can range from mildly painful, or not painful at all (in what are called "silent heart attacks"), to full pain that people would rank a 10 out of 10 in intensity. The pain is often in the chest area, and may radiate down your left arm, to your jaw, or to your back. Look for non pain-related symptoms. In addition to pain in your arm, jaw, neck, and back, there are other symptoms you may see during a cardiac episode, as well. These include: • Nausea, • Lightheadedness or dizziness, • Cold sweating, • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing due to chest tightness, If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms in conjunction with your pain, It is best to see a doctor as soon as possible to rule out the possibility of a heart attack. Note the duration. If your left arm pain has a very short duration (seconds) it is very unlikely to be caused by the heart. Along the same lines, if the pain has persisted for a long time (for days or even weeks), it is also unlikely to be heart-related. If it lasts in the realm of a few minutes to a few hours, however, it may be a heart attack. If your pain is recurring in short intervals, take note of all the durations and intensities of the pain on a piece of paper to bring to your doctor. This could also be heart-related and warrants prompt medical attention When the pain is released or accentuated by movement of the thorax (mid-spine region), it is probably due to a spinal degenerative disc disease, especially in older patients. This type of pain is unlikely to be caused by the heart. Similarly, When the pain appears after a vigorous exercise with your arms, it is probably muscular in origin. Look at your daily patterns. What seems to aggravate it? Consider that your left arm pain could relate to angina. Angina is a pain that occurs when there is insufficient blood flow to the heart. Angina is often a squeezing or pressure sensation; you may feel pain in your shoulders, your chest, your arms, your back, or your neck. It may also resemble the feeling of indigestion. Although it is atypical for angina to appear only in the left arm, it is possible. Angina is usually worsened or provoked with stress - either physical stress (such as exertion, like after climbing a flight of stairs), or emotional stress (such as after a heated conversation or a disagreement at work). If you suspect you may have angina, it is important to see a healthcare provider sooner rather than later. It is not life-threatening like a heart attack, but it nevertheless requires appropriate evaluation and treatment. Identify other symptoms. In addition to the pain in your left arm, take note of any other areas that you are experiencing pain. This is one of the most accurate ways to tell whether your left arm pain is heart-related or not (and if it's serious). A heart attack is likely to be accompanied by: Sudden and excruciating chest pain that radiates down to your left arm. It can be experienced on both arms but it is usually felt in the left arm because it is nearest to the heart. Pain and tightness in the jaw that is usually felt in the lower jaw; it can be in one side only or on both sides. This pain can also feel like a bad toothache. Radiating pain in the shoulders that feels like a heaviness and pressure around the shoulder and chest area. Dull back pain caused by the presence of pain in the chest, jaw, neck and arm. Note that a heart attack may also be "silent," in that it presents without serious pain.
