Sea-level rise
Although it may not be immediately obvious when we visit the beach, sea-level rise is affecting coastlines all over the world. For low-lying countries such as the Netherlands, sea-level rise and tidal surges are a constant threat. Our oceans are rising as a consequence of climate change. As the temperature of seawater increases it expands and the ice melting from ice sheets and glaciers adds more water to the global ocean. We know this because satellites high above our heads measure the temperature of the sea surface and of our changing ice. While the global averaged trend is towards rising levels, there are many regional differences so that in some places it is rising and in other places it is falling. Satellites carrying altimeter instruments systematically measure the height of the sea surface so that sea-level rise can be closely monitored. Altimetry measurements over the last 25 years show that on average sea-level is rising about 3 mm a year and this rise is accelerating. ★ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/ESAsubscribe Check out our full video catalog: http://bit.ly/SpaceInVideos Follow ESA on Twitter: http://bit.ly/ESAonTwitter On Facebook: http://bit.ly/ESAonFacebook On Instagram: http://bit.ly/ESAonInstagram On Flickr: http://bit.ly/ESAonFlickr ESA is Europe's gateway to space. Record 30,203ft (Above Sea Level) flight - 1,174ft higher than Mount Everest
The plane launched at a starting point of 643ft (ASL - above sea level) and climbed an additional 9010m or 29,560ft (AGL - above ground level) at 35:38 in the video. So, the total (ASL - above sea level) height is: 643ft + 29,560ft = 30,203ft. Since Mount Everest is 29,029ft (ASL - above sea level), the plane flew 1,174ft higher than the Earth's highest (ASL - above sea level) mountain in the world. The temp. reading shown in the OSD (upper left corner) is an internal ambient temp gauge inside the foam insulated plane and within the GPS/MAG sensor. The GPS unit is velcro'd directly on top of the AP controller inside the plane. The actual outside temp at ~9000m altitude is estimated to be -36deg C or -32.8deg F while it was 89 deg F on the ground. - Mini Talon (w/modified ext. wings) Wing area (stock): 30 dm^2 Wing area (w/modified new wing extensions): 32.79 dm^2 - AUW: 2142g - (2) Multistar 5200mah 4S Lipos (10,400mah total) - (2) AER7234/46 Aeronaut folding props 12 x 6.5 - Cobra 2820/14 840Kv Motor - Hitec HS-65MG Mighty Metal Gear "Analog" Servos - DragonLink V3 UHF - 1.2Ghz 800mW Vtx - Runcam Swift 1 - Runcam HD2 (stopped working at 7327m on the ascent)

How Earth Would Look If All The Ice Melted
We learned last year that many of the effects of climate change are irreversible. Sea levels have been rising at a greater rate year after year, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimates they could rise by another meter or more by the end of this century. As National Geographic showed us in 2013, sea levels would rise by 216 feet if all the land ice on the planet were to melt. This would dramatically reshape the continents and drown many of the world's major cities. With a DJI Phantom of the third highest volcano in the world, the Llullailaco (6739 m), on the border of Chile and Argentina was climbed in January 2017th. The prevailing conditions are anything but favorable for drone flights. Strong winds and temperatures well below freezing are normal. But luck was on my side! Flying high above the Glass House Mountains, Queensland 2018
Flying high above the Glass House Mountains Queensland 2018 The Glass House Mountains are a group of thirteen hills that rise abruptly from the coastal plain on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. The highest hill is Mount Beerwah at 556 meters above sea level, but the most identifiable of all the hills are Mount Tibrogargan, 364 metres, which from some directions appears to be a face staring out to sea. Mount Ngungun, 253 metres consists of sub-volcanic rock, also known as a hypabyssal rock, an intrusive rock emplaced at medium-to-shallow depths within the crust and has intermediate grain size, and often porphyritic texture between that of volcanic and plutonic rocks. Mount Ngungun and the Glass House Mountains are located near Beerburrum State Forest and Old Gympie Road. From Brisbane, follow the Bruce Highway north, take the Glass House Mountains tourist drive turn-off and follow the signs to the Glass House Mountains. The trip is about one hour and eleven minutes from Brisbane. The Volcanic peaks of the Glass House Mountains rise dramatically from the surrounding Sunshine Coast landscape. They were formed by intrusive plugs, remnants of volcanic activity that occurred 26, 27 million years ago. Molten rock filled small vents or intruded as bodies beneath the surface and solidified into land rocks. Millions of years of erosion have removed the surrounding exteriors of volcanic cores and softer sandstone rock. Whilst the traditional names for the hills themselves are very old, the term 'Glasshouse Mountains' was given more recently by explorer Captain James Cook on 17 May 1770. The peaks reminded him of the glass furnaces in his home county of Yorkshire. Matthew Flinders explored the area and climbed Mount Beerburrum after sailing along Pumicestone Passage in 1799. The Glass House Mountains National Landscape was added to the Australian National Heritage List on 3 August 2006. In the land between the peaks, pineapple and poultry farming, as well as commercial forestry and quarrying are the main land uses. In 2009 as part of the Queensland 150th celebrations, the Glass House Mountains was announced as one of the Q150 Icons of Queensland for its role as a "Natural attraction". The range was formed as molten lava cooled to form hard rock in the cores of volcanoes 26-27 million years ago. The source of the lava was from the East Australian hotspot. The cores of the hills contain columns of comendite from lava which cools quickly into a hard rock. The surrounding softer rocks have been eroded in the subsequent time, forming the spectacular volcanic plugs that remain today. The peaks' location relative to each other exhibits an alignment that is believed to have occurred due to fracturing. Similar to what is currently occurring now in Hawaii. Each of the peaks is protected within the Glass House Mountains National Park. Some of the peaks display vertical columns, particularly Mount Coonowrin, 377 metres, Mount Ngungun, 253 metres and Mount Beerwah, 555 metres at the Organ Pipes. These columns are the result of lava contraction. Scattered throughout the hills are shallow caves which have been formed by wind erosion on rocks that were softened by groundwater. The peaks are culturally significant to the traditional owners, the Gubbi Gubbi people. Under a native title claim, access to the peaks could be restricted as they are considered spiritual places. To the south-east of the Glass House Mountains, the township is an Aboriginal bora ring. The names of each mountain in the range are: Mount Beerburrum 278 metres Mount Beerwah 556 metres Mount Coochin 235 metres Mount Coonowrin or Crookneck or Fake big 377 metres Mount Elimbah or The Saddleback 129 metres Mount Ngungun 253 metres Mount Tibberoowuccum 220 metres Mount Tibrogargan 364 metres Mount Tunbubudla or the Twins 312 and 293 metres Wild Horse Mountain or Round Mountain 123 metres Mount Miketeebumulgrai 199 metres My Minajo Merchandise: https://streamlabs.com/myminajo/#/merch https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glass_House_Mountains https://www.visitsunshinecoast.com/Glass-House-Mountains https://www.npsr.qld.gov.au/parks/glass-house-mountains/ #MyMinajo

Gettin' High Above the Clouds - Volcan Baru (Sailing Curiosity, Boquete Panama)
We share adventures, that's what we do, and this hike is by far the best one we've done since Alaska! Get all the Details of our trip here: http://gonewiththewynns.com/volcan-baru-panama Join our crew on Patreon and become a BIGGER part of the adventure: http://bit.ly/patreon-wynn This is a hike that we tried to talk ourselves out of many times: "It's rainy, we don't have a warm enough coat, there's no guarantee that we'll even get to see the sunrise, etc. etc." I guess that's what makes it so sweet in the end. We set off on an adventure with ZERO guaruntees but (this time) it was 100% worth it. Its our last adventure in Boquete before we drop off the rental car and return to sea level. So grab your warm beverage (or a boozy one), throw on your best jacket and join us on a hike to the highest point in Panama, on top of a volcano and WAY above the clouds. - Jason and Nikki (and the crew too) Enjoy our vids? The View from a mile high above sea level Denver Co
The Colorado State Capitol Building, located at 200 East Colfax Avenue in Denver, Colorado, is the home of the Colorado General Assembly and the offices of the Governor of Colorado and Lieutenant Governor of Colorado. The building is intentionally reminiscent of the United States Capitol. Designed by Elijah E. Myers, it was constructed in the 1890s from Colorado white granite, and opened for use in November 1894. The distinctive gold dome Serving as the beginning of the Capitol Hill district, the historic building sits slightly higher than the rest of downtown Denver. The main entrance hall is open 180 feet (55 m) to the top of the dome, about the height of an 18-story building. Additionally, the official elevation of Denver is measured outside the west entrance to the building, where the fifteenth step is engraved with the words "One Mile Above Sea Level." From this step, at 5,280 feet (1,609 m), the sun can be seen setting behind the Rocky Mountains. A second mile high marker was set in the 18th step in 1969 when Colorado State University students resurveyed the elevation. In 2003, a more accurate measurement was made with modern means, and the 13th step was identified as being one mile (1.6 km) high, where a 3rd marker was installed. The gold marker is said to be exactly one mile above sea level, with an engraving 3 steps below it

What is ABOVE GROUND LEVEL? What does ABOVE GROUND LEVEL mean? ABOVE GROUND LEVEL meaning - ABOVE GROUND LEVEL definition - ABOVE GROUND LEVEL explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ In aviation, atmospheric sciences and broadcasting, a height above ground level (AGL) is a height measured with respect to the underlying ground surface. This is as opposed to altitude/elevation above mean sea level (AMSL), or (in broadcast engineering) height above average terrain (HAAT). In other words, these expressions (AGL, AMSL, HAAT) indicate where the "zero level" or "reference altitude" is located. A pilot flying an aircraft under instrument flight rules (typically under poor visibility conditions) must rely on the aircraft's altimeter to decide when to deploy the undercarriage and prepare for landing. Therefore, the pilot needs reliable information on the height of the plane with respect to the landing area (usually an airport). The altimeter, which is usually a barometer calibrated in units of distance instead of atmospheric pressure, can therefore be set in such a way as to indicate the height of the aircraft above ground. This is done by communicating with the control tower of the airport (to get the current surface pressure) and setting the altimeter so as to read zero on the ground of that airport. Confusion between AGL and AMSL, or improper calibration of the altimeter, may result in controlled flight into terrain, a crash of a fully functioning aircraft under pilot control. While the use of a barometric altimeter setting that provides a zero reading on the ground of the airport is a reference available to pilots, in commercial aviation it is a country-specific procedure that is not often used (it is used, e.g., in Russia, and a few other countries). Most countries (Far East, North and South America, all of Europe, Africa, Australia) use the airport's AMSL (above mean sea level) elevation as a reference. During approaches to landing, there are several other references that are used, including AFE (above field elevation) which is height referencing the highest point on the airfield, TDZE (touchdown zone elevation) or TH (threshold height) which both refer to the elevation of the landing end of the runway measured AMSL and AGL respectively. In general, "altitude" refers to distance above mean sea level (MSL or AMSL), "height" refers to distance above a particular point (e.g. the airport, runway threshold, or ground at present location), and "elevation" describes a feature of the terrain itself in terms of distance above MSL. One mnemonic that can be used is: if it's an altitude you can fly there, if it's an elevation you can walk there, and if it's height that's how far a rock will fall before it hits the ground. In weather and climate studies, measurements or simulations often need to refer to a specific height or altitude, which is naturally AGL. However, the values of geophysical variables measured in various places on the natural (ground) surface may not be easily compared in hilly or mountainous terrain, because part of the observed variability is due to changes in the altitude of the surface. For this reason, variables such as pressure or temperature are sometimes 'reduced' to mean sea level. In general circulation models and global climate models, the state and properties of the atmosphere are specified or computed at a number of discrete locations and heights. When the topography of the continents is explicitly represented, the altitudes of these locations are set above the simulated ground level. This is often implemented using the so-called sigma coordinate system, which is the ratio of the pressure at a location (latitude, longitude, altitude) divided by the pressure at the nadir of that location on ground surface (same latitude, same longitude, altitude AGL = 0). In broadcasting, altitude AGL has relatively little direct bearing on the broadcast range of a station. Rather, it is HAAT (the height above the average terrain (in the surrounding area)) which is used to determine how far a broadcast station (or any other sort of VHF or higher radio-frequency) transmission will travel. From aviation safety perspective though, the more important aspect is the height of the radio tower used to support the radio antenna. In this case, height AGL is the only important measurement for aviation authorities, which require that some tall towers have proper painting and lighting to avoid collisions.

Kiribati: a drowning paradise in the South Pacific | DW Documentary
Climate change and rising sea levels mean the island nation of Kiribati in the South Pacific is at risk of disappearing into the sea. But the island’s inhabitants aren’t giving up. They are doing what they can to save their island from inundation. Can COP23 help make a difference? UN estimates indicate that Kiribati could disappear in just 30 or 40 years. That’s because the average elevation is less than two meters above sea level. And some of the knock-on effects of climate change have made the situation more difficult. Kiribati can hardly be surpassed in terms of charm and natural beauty. There are 33 atolls and one reef island – spread out over an area of 3.5 million square kilometers. All have white, sandy beaches and blue lagoons. Kiribati is the world’s largest state that consists exclusively of atolls. A local resident named Kaboua points to the empty, barren land around him and says, "There used to be a large village here with 70 families." But these days, this land is only accessible at low tide. At high tide, it's all under water. Kaboua says that sea levels are rising all the time, and swallowing up the land. That’s why many people here build walls made of stone and driftwood, or sand or rubbish. But these barriers won't stand up to the increasing number of storm surges. Others are trying to protect against coastal erosion by planting mangrove shrubs or small trees. But another local resident, Vasiti Tebamare, remains optimistic. She works for KiriCAN, an environmental organization. Vasiti says: "The industrialized countries -- the United States, China, and Europe -- use fossil fuels for their own ends. But what about us?" Kiribati's government has even bought land on an island in Fiji, so it can evacuate its people in an emergency. But Vasiti and most of the other residents don't want to leave. _______ Exciting, powerful and informative – DW Documentary is always close to current affairs and international events.
