The wireless and optical domains are being driven closer together, especially as cell sizes get smaller and coordinated transmission techniques become possible. In this interview, Dr. Leonid Kazovsky, Professor (Research) of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, discusses future network architecture and the integration between optical and wireless technology. Prof. Leonid G. Kazovsky joined Stanford University in 1990. He founded Photonics and Networking Research Laboratory (PNRL) at Stanford University and leads PNRL since establishing it in 1990. PNRL team includes some fifteen researchers focused on green (energy efficient) optical/wireless access and in-building networks. Prior to joining Stanford, Prof. Kazovsky was with Bellcore doing research on coherent, WDM, high-speed and other advanced optical fiber communication systems (later, Bellcore changed its name to Telcordia, and was acquired by Ericsson). Prof. Kazovsky's research of coherent optical systems at that time resulted in what is widely considered key foundations of modern coherent systems. While on Bellcore assignments or Stanford sabbaticals, Prof. Kazovsky worked at the Heinrich Hertz Institute, Berlin, Germany; Hewlett-Packard Research Laboratories, Bristol, England; Technical University of Eindhoven, Eindhoven, the Netherland; Scuola Superiore St. Anne, Pisa, Italy; Danish Technical University, Copenhagen, Denmark; and Acreo, Stockholm, Sweden. Through research contracts, consulting engagements, and other arrangements, Prof. Kazovsky worked with many industrial companies and U.S. Government agencies including Corning, Alcatel-Lucent, Sprint, DT, Huawei, DEC, GTE, AT&T, IVP, Lucent, Hitachi, KDD, Furukawa, Fujitsu, Optivision, and Perimeter on the industrial side; and NSF, DARPA, Air Force, Navy, Army, and BMDO on the government side. He also worked extensively with many leading VCs and intellectual property law firms. Prof. Kazovsky serves or served on Editorial Boards of leading journals (IEEE Transactions on Communications, IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, Wireless Networks) and on Program Committees of leading conferences (OFC, CLEO, LEOS, SPIE, and GLOBECOM). He also served as a reviewer for various IEEE and IEE Transactions, Proceedings, and Journals; funding agencies (NSF, OFC, ERC, NRC, etc.) and publishers (Wiley, MacMillan, etc.). Recently, Prof. Kazovsky organized several workshops on hybrid optical/wireless networks at OFC and WCNC; he also co-edited a Special Issue of the IEEE Network Magazine on Next Generation Optical Access Networks. Prof. Kazovsky authored or co-authored three books, three book chapters, fifty five invited journal papers and invited conference talks, some 200 journal technical papers, and some 300 conference papers. His latest book, Broadband Optical Access Networks, was published by John Wiley & Sons in 2011. Prof. Kazovsky is a Fellow of IEEE and a Fellow of OSA.

2014 ISIT Plenary Lecture To Infinity and Beyond: New Frontiers in Wireless Information Theory Andrea Goldsmith Stanford University Abstract: Although wireless information theory has been declared dead many times over, the field today is thriving with abundant open problems of significant theoretical and practical importance. This talk will explore our recent results on wireless information theory that go towards infinity in the number of users, and back from infinity in other dimensions. In particular, we will describe our work on achievable rate regions for single-hop networks with any number of users, obtained through user virtualization followed by coding via a graphical Markov model. The resulting achievable rate regions meet or exceed all existing rate regions for any single-hop network, including those of interference channels, broadcast channels, and cognitive radio channels. Moving back from infinity, we examine the implications of finite delay, energy, feedback, and sampling with a particular focus on our results unveiling rate-distortion theory and channel capacity for sub-Nyquist sampled sources and channels. We end the talk describing additional dreams and challenges in wireless information theory, including the application of information-theoretic analysis tools to explore new frontiers in biology and neuroscience. Biography: Andrea Goldsmith is the Stephen Harris professor in the School of Engineering and a professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. She was previously on the faculty of Electrical Engineering at Caltech. She co-founded and served as CTO of Accelera, Inc. and of Quantenna Communications, Inc. and has also held industry positions at Maxim Technologies, Memorylink Corporation, and AT&T Bell Laboratories. Dr. Goldsmith is a Fellow of the IEEE and of Stanford, and she has received several awards for her work, including the IEEE Communications Society and Information Theory Society joint paper award, the IEEE Communications Society Best Tutorial Paper Award, the National Academy of Engineering Gilbreth Lecture Award, the IEEE ComSoc Communications Theory Technical Achievement Award, the IEEE ComSoc Wireless Communications Technical Achievement Award, the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, and the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal's Women of Influence Award. She is author of the book "Wireless Communications" and co-author of the books "MIMO Wireless Communications" and "Principles of Cognitive Radio," all published by Cambridge University Press. She received the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from U.C. Berkeley. Dr. Goldsmith has served as editor for the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, the Journal on Foundations and Trends in Communications and Information Theory and in Networks, the IEEE Transactions on Communications, and the IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine as well as on the Steering Committee for the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications. She participates actively in committees and conference organization for the IEEE Information Theory and Communications Societies and has served on the Board of Governors for both societies. She has also been a Distinguished Lecturer for both societies, served as President of the IEEE Information Theory Society in 2009, founded and chaired the student committee of the IEEE Information Theory Society, and chaired the Emerging Technology Committee of the IEEE Communications Society. At Stanford she received the inaugural University Postdoc Mentoring Award and has been active in committees to innovate and revise both graduate and undergraduate education university-wide. She served as Chair of Stanford's Faculty Senate in 2009 and currently serves on its Faculty Senate and on its Budget Group.

These OSNs offer attractive means for digital social interactions and information sharing, but also raise a number of security and privacy issues. While OSNs allow users to restrict access to shared data, they currently do not provide any mechanism to enforce privacy concerns over data associated with multiple users. To this end, we propose an approach to enable the protection of shared data associated with multiple users in OSNs. We formulate an access control model to capture the essence of multiparty authorization requirements, along with a multiparty policy specification scheme and a policy enforcement mechanism. Besides, we present a logical representation of our access control model that allows us to leverage the features of existing logic solvers to perform various analysis tasks on our model. We also discuss a proof-of-concept prototype of our approach as part of an application in Facebook and provide usability study and system evaluation of our method.

Wireless Networks for Cars Raja Sengupta [Assistant Professor, Civil & Environmental Engineering, UC Berkeley] Abstract: On October 21 1999, the FCC allocated 75 megahertz of spectrum as part of the USDOT's "Intelligent Transportation Systems" (ITS) national program. It noted: The record in this proceeding overwhelmingly supports the allocation of spectrum for DSRC based ITS applications to increase traveler safety, reduce fuel consumption and pollution, and continue to advance the nations economy. The first industry-government supported standard came on August 24 2001. ASTM's E17.51 standards committee voted 20-2 to base DSRC on a modification of IEEE 802.11a, called IEEE 802.11a Roadside at the time, and now named IEEE 802.11p. The chipsets required to the build the radios, started shipping in volume from Atheros, a month later. Now, seven years later, the chipsets are in millions of home radios everywhere and in DSRC radios almost nowhere. Specifically, we have 20 operated by UC Berkeley in California, 57 by the national VII program in Michigan, and a few in New York. There are no DSRC applications available to consumers for the enhancement of traveler safety, or any of the other goals endorsed by the FCC. We will discuss some of the scientific challenges leading to this delay and a strategy to realize USDOT and FCC's vision by leveraging the rise of the mobile Internet. Biography: Dr. Raja Sengupta is an Associate Professor in the Systems Engineering program within Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of California at Berkeley. He received his Ph.d from the EECS department, University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. His research interests are in vehicular ad-hoc networks and unmanned air vehicles. He is Associate Editor of the IEEE Control Systems magazine. He was Program Chair of the IEEE Conference on Autonomous Intelligent Networked Systems 2003, Co-General Chair of the first ACM MOBICOM Workshop on Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks 2004 and Co-Program Chair of the second workshop.

In this video see a No Name / Brandless Wireless-N WiFi repeater and/or WiFi Range Extender setup, repeater configuration and review. I bought this off of ebay for $12.00. See me do a WiFi repeater installation and see how to setup a WiFi extender for a WiFi booster of your existing WLAN network. Watch how to setup Wireless-n WiFi repeater and have a wireless amplifier extender pushing your signal out another 30 to 50 feet from your existing wireless router. It's not hard for anyone to learn how to install WiFi extender and get WiFi repeater setup instructions simply by viewing my video in just a few minutes. It's not hard to figure out where to place WiFi extender after you watch my how-to video. Get more range for your WLAN network at home and office with a wireless range extender. This wireless-N WiFi repeater extended my WiFi Netgear router sigal further than I expected it to do. I was able to get a consistent wireless signal outside on my porch and patio using my tablet, mobile phone and laptop. Is this WiFi repeater going to last for the long run? I don't know. It was made in China but just about everything is today. So for $12 why not give it a try. Cheaper than paying $79 plus tax at your local Walmart or Office Depot with a brand name on it that was also made in China! So far I've been using this for a few days and it has work good as a WiFi router range extender or wifi range router repeater extender booster if you like to use that long phrase instead. For me it's just a WiFi repeater that repeats my fair to good signal for a longer distance. Like on the other end of my house or even in my neighbors house. Yep for real!. Some important things to remember are: 1) If your WiFi repeater is to close to your main router, they will compete against each other's signal since they are both on the same WiFi channel, 1,6, or 11. So you must distance the WiFi extender far enough away to so the channels don't overlap each other. This will only slow down your LAN/WLAN. Hence, defeating your reason for installing a Wireless-n WiFi repeater to begin with! 2) I believe in surge protectors. Put your wireless repeater on one. Protect it against power outages and AC surges. You might just call it network or electronic insurance, just like car insurance or auto insurance for your box. I know it was only $12.00 but you do want it to last for a while, right? Don't let the power company kill your new WiFi repeater extender during the night or day when you are not home. 3) Set up can be done by a laptop, computer desktop/tower, tablet or cell phone with WiFi connectivity with an Internet Browser. But it can also be done by a hard wired RJ45 LAN cable too. See my last note for instructions on how to use a RJ45 cable for setup. BTW: Don't allow yourself into thinking that this is a WiFi router. A WiFi repeater router, a network WiFi repeater extender are two entirely different dogs. A router routes internet information and the other extends and/or repeats the information on a network that a router routes from the Internet out onto your network. Think of this device more as a WiFi range extender. Some times it's also refer to as a router range extender, a repeater extender, wifi booster extender or wireless router extender. But they all just repeat your wireless signal halfway between your wifi router and where you want to set up shop. How to Expand Your Wireless Range across your house or yard using this cheap made in China no name no brand Wireless repeater for all your computer devices including cell phones. Steps for Hard Wired Setup & Hook-up: Here's how to go about setting it up, if you don't have a laptop or computer connected via WiFi, in other words, your computer is connected by way of a hard wired RJ45 LAN cable. Keep in mind that the following procedure is based on you having at least a WiFi router & modem plus the repeater unit: 1) Plug the WiFi Repeater/Extender into a AC wall socket and wait a minute or two. 2) Than connect your computer with the WiFi Repeater by using the enclosed RJ45 LAN cable (you will need to get one if your unit did not come with a RJ45 LAN cat5/6 cable) one end plugs into the RJ45 port on the left side of the repeater and the other end goes into your RJ45 port on your computer. 3) To complete the setup, follow my video steps starting at opening up a web browser and type 192.168.10.1 One more last thing. This may not necessary be the best wireless range extender but it's one of the lowest price repeaters I've ever come across that actually works GREAT. Some New Information as of 01/14/2017 The other day while surfing the around the internet I found something interesting over at Walmart.com. It seems that even Walmart is getting in on the act. I just Googled wifi repeater walmart or wifi extender walmart, and sure enough they are selling something very similar to the wifi Extender/Repeater seen in my video review that I bought off eBay. MBSE Colloquium: Yiguang Hong, "Distributed optimization of continuous-time multi-agent networks" Monday, December 5, 2016 10:00 a.m. 1146 AV Williams Building Distributed optimization of continuous-time multi-agent networks Yiguang Hong Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science Chinese Academy of Sciences (Roundtable at 2 pm in 1146 AVW) Abstract In this talk, we introduce some of our recent results on distributed convex optimization design of continuous-time multi-agent systems. After providing background and preliminaries, we start with distributed convex computation. Then we study some fundamental problems of distributed optmization with various constraints based on gradient and consensus. Moreover, we also extend our results to genearalized cases by considering uncertainties (such as approxiate gradients and external disturbance) and the agents with nonlinear or high order dynmics. In our study, we find a good connection between convex optimizaiton and nonlinear control. Biography Yiguang Hong received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Peking University, China, and the Ph.D. degree from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), China. He is currently a Professor in Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science, CAS, and serves as the Director of Key Lab of Systems and Control, CAS and the Director of the Information Technology Division, National Center for Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences, CAS. His current research interests include nonlinear control, multi-agent systems, distributed optimization and social networks. Prof. Hong serves as Editor-in-Chief of Control Theory and Technology and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Acta Automatica Sinca. He also serves or served as Associate Editors for many journals including the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems, IEEE Control Systems Magazine, and Nonlinear Analysis: Hybrid Systems. He is a recipient of the Guang Zhaozhi Award at the Chinese Control Conference, Young Author Prize of the IFAC World Congress, Young Scientist Award of CAS, and the Youth Award for Science and Technology of China, and the National Natural Science Prize of China. One of his papers became a Most Cited Article of Automatica during 2006-2010, with current citations over 1000 (according to google scholar).

Friday, March 11, 2016 11:00 a.m. 1146 AV Williams Building The Advanced Networks Colloquium The Road Ahead for Wireless Technology: Dreams and Challenges Andrea Goldsmith Stephen Harris Professor Department of Electrical Engineering Stanford University Abstract Wireless technology has enormous potential to change the way we live, work, and play. Future wireless networks will support Gigabit per second multimedia communication between people and devices with high reliability and uniform coverage indoors and out. Software will create a virtual wireless network cloud, enabling resource management, seamless connectivity, and roaming across heterogeneous access networks, including WiFi and cellular systems. Wireless technology will also enable smart and energy-efficient homes and buildings, automated highways and skyways, and in-body networks for analysis and treatment of medical conditions. The shortage of spectrum will be alleviated by advances in cognitive radios, and breakthrough energy-efficiency algorithms and hardware will be employed to make wireless systems “green”. There are many technical challenges that must be overcome in order to make this vision a reality. This talk will describe what the wireless future might look like and some of the innovations and breakthroughs that are required to realize this vision. Biography Andrea Goldsmith is the Stephen Harris professor in the School of Engineering and a professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. She was previously on the faculty of Electrical Engineering at Caltech. She co-founded and served as CTO of both Wildfire.Exchange, which develops software-defined wireless network technology, and of Quantenna Communications Inc., which develops high-performance ultra-reliable WiFi chipsets. She has previously held industry positions at Maxim Technologies, Memorylink Corporation, and AT&T Bell Laboratories. Dr. Goldsmith is a Fellow of the IEEE and of Stanford, and she has received several awards for her work, including the IEEE Communications Society and Information Theory Society joint paper award, the IEEE Communications Society Best Tutorial Paper Award, the National Academy of Engineering Gilbreth Lecture Award, the IEEE Communication Theory Technical Committee Recognition Award, the IEEE Wireless Communications Technical Committee Recognition Award, the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, and the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal’s Women of Influence Award. She is author of the book ``Wireless Communications'' and co-author of the books ``MIMO Wireless Communications'' and “Principles of Cognitive Radio,” all published by Cambridge University Press. She received the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from U.C. Berkeley. Dr. Goldsmith served on the Steering Committee for the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, and has previously served as editor for the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, the Journal on Foundations and Trends in Communications and Information Theory and in Networks, the IEEE Transactions on Communications, and the IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine. Dr. Goldsmith participates actively in committees and conference organization for the IEEE Information Theory and Communications Societies and has served on the Board of Governors for both societies. She has been a Distinguished Lecturer for both societies, served as the President of the IEEE Information Theory Society in 2009, founded and chaired the student committee of the IEEE Information Theory society, and chaired the Emerging Technology Committee of the IEEE Communications Society. At Stanford she received the inaugural University Postdoc Mentoring Award, served as Chair of its Faculty Senate and as an elected member for multiple terms, and currently serves on its Budget Group and Task Force on Women and Leadership.

Keynote: Social and Economic Effects of Open Networking - Vint Cerf, Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist, Google About Vint Cerf Vinton G. Cerf is vice president and Chief Internet Evangelist for Google. He contributes to global policy development and continued spread of the Internet. Widely known as one of the "Fathers of the Internet," Cerf is the co-designer of the TCP/IP protocols and the architecture of the Internet. He has served in executive positions at MCI, the Corporation for National Research Initiatives and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and on the faculty of Stanford University. Vint Cerf served as chairman of the board of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) from 2000-2007 and has been a Visiting Scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory since 1998. Cerf served as founding president of the Internet Society (ISOC) from 1992-1995. Cerf is a Foreign Member of the British Royal Society and Swedish Academy of Engineering, and Fellow of IEEE, ACM, and American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the International Engineering Consortium, the Computer History Museum, the British Computer Society, the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists, the Worshipful Company of Stationers and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He has served as President of the Association for Computing Machinery, chairman of the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) and completed a term as Chairman of the Visiting Committee on Advanced Technology for the US National Institute of Standards and Technology. President Obama appointed him to the National Science Board in 2012. Cerf is a recipient of numerous awards and commendations in connection with his work on the Internet, including the US Presidential Medal of Freedom, US National Medal of Technology, the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, the Prince of Asturias Award, the Tunisian National Medal of Science, the Japan Prize, the Charles Stark Draper award, the ACM Turing Award, Officer of the Legion d’Honneur and 29 honorary degrees. In December 1994, People magazine identified Cerf as one of that year's "25 Most Intriguing People." His personal interests include fine wine, gourmet cooking and science fiction. Cerf and his wife, Sigrid, were married in 1966 and have two sons, David and Bennett.

Advanced Networks Colloquium: Urbashi Mitra, Queues and Bacteria---a Tale of Modeling and Experiment Friday, April 22, 2016 11:00 a.m. 1146 AV Williams Building The Advanced Networks Colloquium Queues and Bacteria---a Tale of Modeling and Experiment Urbashi Mitra Dean's Professor Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical Engineering Department of Computer Science University of Southern California Lecture: 11:00 am, 1146 AV Williams Roundtable: 3:30 pm, 2168 AV Williams Abstract Microbial communities play a significant role in bioremediation, plant growth promotion, human and animal digestion, disease, elemental cycles, the carbon-cycle and maintaining clean water. While the diffusion of chemical signals in the surrounding medium of biological systems has been heavily studied, the role of such processes is not fully understood in certain bacterial interactions. Furthermore, the electron transfer mechanism occurring in living cells and its role in cell-cell interaction is less understood. In this talk, two bacterial network case studies are examined: electron transfer in bacterial filaments (multi-hopped bacterial networks) and the inducement of quorum sensing in homogeneous populations (multi-terminal bacterial networks). Queuing theory is shown to be a simple, yet powerful method by which such systems can be modeled. Our initial models provide excellent match with experimental data. The queuing theoretic models further suggest biologically relevant channel models for information theoretic analysis of larger systems. The eventual goal is to couple modeling with experiment to optimize the design of microbial systems whether that be fuel cells or preventing infection. Biography Urbashi Mitra received the B.S. and the M.S. degrees from the University of California at Berkeley and her Ph.D. from Princeton University. Prior to her PhD studies, she was a Member of Technical Staff at Bellcore. After a six-year stint at the Ohio State University (OSU), she joined the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, where she is currently a Dean’s Professor of Electrical Engineering. She is the inaugural Editor-in-Chief for the IEEE Transactions on Molecular, Biological and Multi-scale Communications. Dr. Mitra is a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Communications Society for 2015-2016. She is a member of the IEEE Information Theory Society's Board of Governors (2002- 2007, 2012-2017) and the IEEE Signal Processing Society’s Technical Committee on Signal Processing for Communications and Networks (2012-2016). Dr. Mitra is a Fellow of the IEEE. She is the recipient of: a 2015 Insight Magazine STEM Diversity Award, 2012 Globecom Signal Processing for Communications Symposium Best Paper Award, 2012 US National Academy of Engineering Lillian Gilbreth Lectureship, USC Center for Excellence in Research Fellowship (2010- 2013), the 2009 DCOSS Applications & Systems Best Paper Award, Texas Instruments Visiting Professor (Fall 2002, Rice University), 2001 Okawa Foundation Award, 2000 OSU College of Engineering Lumley Award for Research, 1997 OSU College of Engineering MacQuigg Award for Teaching, and a 1996 National Science Foundation CAREER Award. She has been/is an Associate Editor for the following IEEE publications: Transactions on Signal Processing (2012--2015), Transactions on Information Theory (2007-2011), Journal of Oceanic Engineering (2006-2011), and Transactions on Communications (1996-2001). She has co-chaired: (technical program) 2014 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory in Honolulu, HI, 2014 IEEE Information Theory Workshop in Hobart, Tasmania, IEEE 2012 International Conference on Signal Processing and Communications, Bangalore India, and the IEEE Communication Theory Symposium at ICC 2003 in Anchorage, AK; and was the general co-chair for the first ACM Workshop on Underwater Networks at Mobicom 2006, Los Angeles, CA. She served as co- Director of the Communication Sciences Institute at the University of Southern California from 2004-2007. Her research interests are in: wireless communications, communication and sensor networks, biological communication systems, detection and estimation and the interface of communication, sensing and control.
