Smart Sun tracking mechanism

The smart sun tracking system was developed by Jeya Ganesh N and Maniprakash.S under the guidance of Dr.L.Chandrasekaran, Prof.S.M.Srinivasan and Prof.Arun Srinivasa in the Active Material Systems and Structures Lab (AMSS Lab), Department of Applied Mechanics, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai-600 036. The system utilizes the sun's energy directly to effect rotation of solar panels using a shape memory element and an innovative mechanism, thus, dispensing with any other external power source. The project was executed during their M.Tech degree programme funded under the INNOVATIVE STUDENT PROJECT scheme, Indian Institute of Technology Madras. Recently, a manuscript titled, 'A smart sun tracking mechanism,' has been sent for possible publication in "Renewable Energy" - an international journal.

As the world turns its attention towards the sustainable development goals, sustainable architecture offers a very interesting prospect of minimizing negative environmental impacts by buildings, save energy and safeguard human health and well being. In this talk, David explores the potential bamboo creates and how well it can be a wonderful and strong tool. David was born, raised and educated in Colombia where he studied Civil Engineering. From 2000 to 2003 he contributed to the reconstruction of the Coffee-growing region following an earthquake. Here he became fascinated about bamboo structures. In 2003, he moved to the UK to study an MSc in Earthquake Engineering. From 2004 to 2009 he worked in consultancy, working as a structural engineer. His work ranged from multi-storey timber-frame structures to very large steel and concrete buildings. In 2010 he became a chartered structural engineer. In 2009, determined to research bamboo, David joined Coventry University. He currently chairs an international task force for Bamboo Construction. Bioenergy production using microbial fuel cell technologies

Certain naturally occurring microorganisms are capable of electron transfer outside or into the cell. These microorganisms are being used in several new technologies, based on microbial fuel cells (MFCs), to produce energy and clean water. In an MFC, exoelectrogenic bacteria oxidize organic matter and release electrons to an electrode (anode). These electrons flow to the counter electrode (cathode) where they combine with oxygen and protons to form water, generating current and power. Sustained electricity generation is possible using virtually any type of biodegradable organic matter including pure compounds (acetic acid and other volatile acids, glucose and sugars, amino acids and proteins, etc.), complex organic matter in wastewater (domestic, animal, food, and other industries), and agricultural materials (cellulose and fermentation end products). The MFC architecture can be modified to use energy in the organic matter to accomplish water desalination without any electrical input or high pressures. In the absence of oxygen, and by adding voltage to that produced by the bacteria, it is also possible to produce hydrogen gas at the cathode in a device called a microbial electrolysis cell (MEC). The voltage needed (greater than 0.2 V) is substantially smaller than that needed to electrolyze water. Hydrogen gas produced can be recovered at nearly 100% of the stoichiometric yield in an MEC for certain substrates, and two to four times more energy is recovered as hydrogen gas than used as electrical energy. By using electrotrophic microorganisms on the cathode, it is possible to produce other products from the current such as methane. In this March seminar hosted by the MIT Energy Initiative, Bruce Logan of Penn State University reviewed what is known about exoelectrogenic and electrotophic microorganisms, summarized advances in increasing current densities and reducing materials costs, and discussed recent field trials using larger, pilot-scale MFC and MEC systems. This talk was presented on March 2, 2010 as part of the IHS Markit Seminar Series. About the speaker: Bruce Logan is the Kappe Professor of Environmental Engineering at Penn State University, and Director of the Engineering Energy & Environmental Institute. He has published over 240 journal papers and several books, including one on microbial fuel cells, and works in a variety of research areas including bioenergy production, bioremediation, environmental transport processes, colloidal dynamics, and microbial adhesion. Dr. Logan was recently awarded the Athalie Richardson Irvine Clarke Prize for his research to develop an energy sustainable water infrastructure. He is a visiting professor at Newcastle University in England, Harbin Institute of Technology and Dalian University of Technology in China, and an Investigator with the King Abdullah University of Science & Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia. ___ The MIT Energy Initiative is MIT’s hub for energy research, education, and outreach. Safe Design of Two-Dimensional Materials

Speaker: Robert Hurt, Professor of Engineering, Brown University Abstract: Ultrathin sheet-like 2D materials are an important and rapidly growing class of synthetic nanostructures. The premise of our research is that the biological responses to 2D materials are initiated by specific molecular events at the material-fluid interface that can be understood through fundamental materials chemistry and physics. Their extreme geometries, which combine atomic-scale thickness with micron-scale lateral dimension, are uncommon in nature, and the resulting geometric mismatch with natural biological tissue gives rise to novel modes of mechanical interaction and stress during cellular uptake and processing. A recent thermodynamic analysis shows that many emerging 2D materials will become non-equilibrium structures when introduced into biological fluid phases, and will undergo chemical transformations in parallel with the biological response. Of particular importance are dissolution processes that destroy the nanosheet geometry and create pools of biodissolution products that can be main drivers of the biological response. This talk will consider the fundamental properties and behaviors that govern the safe design of 2D materials. Case studies on graphene, MoS2, and MoO3 will emphasize bio-transformations and persistence as well as unusual shape-dependent effects on membranes during cellular uptake and vesicular packaging. Biographical Sketch: Robert Hurt is a Professor of Engineering at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal Carbon. He received a B.S. from Michigan Technological University and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, both in chemical engineering. Before coming to Brown, he held posts at Bayer AG in Leverkusen, Germany, and Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, California. He was the founding Director of Brown’s materials and nanosciences institute, IMNI, and served 2004-2010 as Editor of Carbon before becoming Editor-in-Chief in 2013. He has been Technical Program Chair for the International Carbon Conference and Graffin Lecturer of the American Carbon Society. He received the Tau Beta Pi teaching award at Brown, the Charles E. Pettinos Award of the American Carbon Society in 2013, and the 2017 Graphene Award of the International Association of Advanced Materials. He has co-authored 140 scientific publications and his current research focuses on environmental nanotechnology, graphene, and other 2D materials, the nanobio-interface, and safe material design. He current directs the NIH-supported Superfund Research Program Center at Brown on environmental health.

He is a graduate and former chief resident of both AEGD and GPR residency programs. He has completed and served as an associate instructor for several post graduate dental educational institutions. Over the course of the past 16 years Dr. Radz has lectured internationally, teaching the materials, techniques, and technology used in esthetic dentistry. He has presented at many major national meetings including the ADA, Yankee Dental Congress, Greater New York, Chicago MidWinter, both northern and southern California Dental meetings, the Texas Dental Association and 13 years in a row at the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Since 2004 Dr. Radz has served as an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Colorado School of Dentistry in the department of Restorative Dentistry. He has published over 150 articles related to esthetic dentistry, and serves on the editorial board of 7 different dental journals, including the Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry. He has served as editor-in-chief of 2 dental journals, and served for 10 years as an evaluator for Reality, and now performs product evaluations for the Catapult team. In 2003 and 2011 he was the program cochairman for the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry’s annual scientific meeting, in 2013 he was Chairman. He is an active member of the AGD. From 2004-2015 he has been listed in Dentistry Today’s “Top Clinician’s in Continuing Education”. Locally, he’s been consistently listed in 5280 magazine’s list of Colorado’s “Top Dentists” by his peers. Dr. Radz has served as a clinical consultant for dozens of dental manufactures and laboratories. He has provided clinical and promotional photography for commercial publication. His photography has been featured on the cover of 5 different dental journals, as well as 2calendars. Outside the scope of dentistry Dr. Radz has contributed his photography to the model portfolio of dozens of local models, professional cheerleaders, TV personalities, and even has had his photography used by an online swimsuit catalogue. Professor Allan Matthews, Professor of Surface Engineering and Tribology at The University of Manchester and the Director of the BP International Centre for Advanced Materials, delivered the fourth BP-ICAM webinar of 2017 on the topic of developing and selecting tribological coatings. For many years, it was widely believed that the best way to reduce the wear of a surface was to make it harder. This idea was implicit in one of the guiding ‘laws’ of wear (Archard’s Wear law) which stated that wear rate is directly proportional to load and inversely proportional to hardness. In practice, this ‘law’ doesn’t hold true, at least not in the vast majority of real-life wear situations, but this “myth” is still perpetuated in many tribology textbooks. In practice, what we do know is that both the elastic modulus (E) and the hardness (H) must be considered together when seeking to reduce wear. In fact it is the ratio H/E which gives us the best indicator of wear resistance, especially for coatings. In this webinar, the reasons for this were discussed and the implications for the development of improved wear-resistant surfaces are outlined, with examples of surfaces which take the optimisation of the H/E ratio as the goal. Examples of coatings which achieve this were also discussed, including nanocomposite and nanolayered coatings. Mention was also given to so-called ‘duplex’ coating systems, which combine surface treatments with coatings to gain maximum tribological benefits. Professor Allan Matthews is Professor of Surface Engineering and Tribology in the School of Materials at The University of Manchester and Director of the BP International Centre for Advanced Materials. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. Professor Allan Matthews has published over 300 refereed papers as well as several books and book chapters. He has had a central role in many professional and learned societies, including the British Vacuum Council, the American Vacuum Society and the Society of Vacuum Coaters. Professor Allan Matthews has received several awards, including the IoM3 Gold Medal in 2011. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Elsevier journal Surface and Coatings Technology.
