Top up your teaching skills -Principles and Pitfalls in Language Assessment

59:47
In this webinar, NILE Director Thom Kiddle will discuss key principles in developing and delivering valid and reliable language tests and assessments. We will look at what makes a test valid, and ways of ensuring that we are measuring what we claim to measure. We will also consider the impact of the CEFR and the rise of digital technology on testing practices in the 21st century. Finally, we will look at some of the pitfalls to avoid in item writing and test delivery, giving teachers clear principles to develop their own language assessment literacy. Thom Kiddle has worked at NILE since 2011, after moving back to the UK from Chile where he was head of academic research and educational technology at the Chilean-British University. He has previously worked in Portugal, the UK, Australia and Thailand in language teaching, teacher training and language assessment. He has a Master’s degree in Language Testing from Lancaster University and the Cambridge Delta, and his role at NILE involves strategic and organisational management, and training and consultancy in a range of areas including testing and assessment, learning technologies, materials development and language teaching methodology. Thom is also treasurer and founding director of AQUEDUTO – the Association for Quality Education and Training Online; webmaster for the Testing, Evaluation and Assessment Special Interest Group of IATEFL; and a member of the Eaquals Board of Trustees.

Natural Language Music Learning Principle 5 Part 2: Focus on the Feeling, Not the Notes!

04:34
This video is part of the 10 part e-learning series "You Too Can Play Music! The Ten Principles of Learning Music That Most Teachers Don't Teach", a natural language learning based approach to learning how to play and understand music. To view the entire series for free please visit https://lammastudios.com/news/2018/12/03/you-too-can-play-music/ The big open secret about music is that people don't listen to music as much as they feel it. This is why we can listen to two performances of the same song and have a positive reaction to one and not the other. The difference is the feeling behind the performance. Many performers make the mistake of focusing on notes and technique while they play. This is similar talking to someone who speaks while choosing every word carefully or consciously trying to control the tone of their voice or their tongue and lip placement. This method leads to hesitation, many more mistakes, fear, lack of passion or conviction, and overall loss of the flow of communication. Instead, we should focus on communicating our ideas and feelings without worrying about words, notes, or technique. When we focus on the big ideas and feelings behind what we are trying to communicate things will work out much better. The goal of music is the expression of feelings. Make that your goal and your musicianship will improve by leaps and bounds.
