The Dance of Words and Images Montgomery Fellows Program at Dartmouth presents A Conversation with Montgomery Fellow Larry Gonick and Professor Ricardo L Siri. Recorded Monday, February 5, 2018 As a cartoonist and graphic artist, Larry Gonick is a pioneering science and social science communicator best known for his various "Cartoon Guides" and "Cartoon Histories",most notably The Cartoon History of the United States and the all-encompassing multivolume Cartoon History of the Universe (volume III was recognized with a Harvey Award -- the "Oscar" for comics and cartoons, so to speak). His "Cartoon Guides" to statistics, algebra, calculus, computer science, physics, and chemistry, to name only a few, have become classics in the world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. His Cartoon Guide to Genetics was among the earliest and most accurate modern introductions to the subject written for a broad audience and serving a generation of biology students as a study guide to the field. A Harvard graduate in mathematics with a broad interest in adjacent fields and beyond, Larry Gonick is considered "the most well-known and respected of cartoonists who have applied their craft to unraveling the mysteries of science". At a time of rethinking pedagogy and new ways of teaching, paired with thecopious emergence and popularity of graphic novels, comics, and cartoons, Larry Gonick's work occupies an important space between textbook and popular exposition, a hybrid art form that is not a reduction as much as it is a distillation of science at a level of accuracy. Gonick's books are often assigned reading in college and high school classes. "With his eye-catching and joyful graphics, along with precise but 'human' explanations, his science books achieve a level of effectiveness that most lecturers still aspire to. They are truly classics of expository writing and communication", as one of his nominators says.

Interested in a bioinformatics, computational biology, bioengineering, or machine learning career? This introduction tutorial shows how to prepare for these fields with a reading list in biology, physics, statistics, and computer science. The next video will cover how to combine cytoscape, genepattern, and io software together to do scientific research. *What is Jupyter? What is io?* Jupyter is a new operating system has become the most popular tool in data science. io is a new versions of jupyter that is perfect for beginners wanting learn how to code, because it’s easy to install and gives you all the tools you need. io also lets you program on any device! This is because io is a website that runs on google cloud compute engine. I also show how you can build fast jupyter applications using io online. *Books* Cartoon Guide to Chemistry: Gonick and Criddle Cartoon Guide to Physics: Gonick and Huffman Cartoon Guide to Genetics: Larry Gonick and Mark Wheelis Doing Bayesian Data Analysis: John Kruschke Deep Learning: Goodfellow, Bengio, Courville Information Theory, Inference and Learning Algorithms: David MacKay Machine Learning- A Probabilistic Perspective: Kevin Murphy CRISPR/Cas9 in Genome Editing and Beyond: Wang, La Russa, Qi Statistical Methods in Molecular Evolution: Rasmus Nielsen Molecular Biology of the Cell: Bruce Alberts, et al Chemistry- A Molecular Approach: Nivaldo Tro University Physics with Modern Physics: Young and Freedman Consistent Quantum Theory: Robert Griffiths Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics: John Von Neumann *Tutorial Topics* Introduction- 0:0 Here we explain what bioinformatics is. BioInformatics is were biology computer science, and statistics meet. BioEngineering Professor Russ Altman, notes that these fields are combined together to create software. You learn how biology can be used to solve computer science problems. For instance, how open source software can be analyzed using phylogenetic algorithms. We also introduce io which lets you do computer programming in any language on any device. I do most of my programming on an ipad! You can also use io to build websites. Birth of Machine Learning and Statistical Physics- 3:10 We start by learning how chemistry and data science are connected through an interesting algorithm called entropy. Entropy is was invented by physicist Gibbs and later invented by Claude Shannon. Shannon invented this in something called information theory. Von Neumann told Shannon about the connection between these, which is why both are called entropy. Physics in Machine Learning and Evolutionary Biology- 6:40 We learn how the statistical algorithms invented in physics are used today in the cutting edge of biology and machine learning. A great example of this is the Ising model which uses variational inference. We also cover what books to read learn about neural network and bayesian statistics. It also introduces the programming language R. How to Learn Biology- 9:30 I show where to begin in genetics and then what book to read when you want a deeper molecular biology approach. I introduce a great research paper on CRISPR CAS9 technology, but then also mention that there are other technologies, for instance high throughput sequencing methods like microfluidics in abate lab. How to Learn Programming- 11:00 I recommend the best websites and youtube channels for learning programming. The websites codecademy, w3 schools, and google cloud's quickstart tutorials are awesome for learning to code. Also Socratica's youtube channel is great for python. Cytoscape and io Online- 13:05 Learn to take any graphical network you create in cytoscape and then publish it as a website using io Online. I build a website that anyone can go to to check out the bioinformatics reading list. In the next video I'm going to combine io, Cytoscape, and GenePattern to show examples of scientific research in bioinformatics.

Monday, April 9 For generations Harvard's libraries, archives, and museums have been pre-eminent participants in support of the research, teaching, and learning carried out both within the university, and also beyond its walls. In an increasingly connected global society, interdisciplinary work is becoming the norm and researchers increasingly seek and share information across formats, genres, and institutional settings. To support users and to continue to grow and thrive, libraries, archives, and museums must work and grow together as never before. This "strategic conversation" brings together those who have given thought to these issues. They have inspired changes and faced challenges along the way. Three presenters, one of each from the domains of libraries, archives, and museums, will outline the vision they bring to their institutions, how they envision the major points of commonality, their greatest hurdles, and how the lessons learned in collection development of physical collections, do or do not apply to collection development in the digital domain. Libraries: Tom Hickerson, Vice Provost of Libraries and Cultural Resources, University of Calgary Archives: David Ferriero, Archivist of the United States Museums: Holly Witchey, Professor, Johns Hopkins University; Interim Director, Marcus Institute for Digital Education in the Arts Moderator: Gunter Waibel, Director, Digitization Program, Smithsonian

Hi. I’m Patrick, a proud member of the “Dreamkeepers”. I have been a curious child who happens to have a special love for science since I could read (lets say, 3 years old). It was when my mother purchased “The Big Book Of Science” from DK publishing (with pictures, obviously) that really did spark my inner flame. I have since been engrossed in science and continued on a crusade to absorb the knowledge of anything scientific that I could set my hands on. Be it “Newton”(the magazine), “The New York Times”, “The Atlantic”, or the entire “The Cartoon Guide” Series by Larry Gonick. But then I realized there was an issue. As many books I read, I always stopped short of the real deal. The actual expedition—until now. I am extremely grateful for New Oriental who presented this opportunity for me to join Operation Earth. Operation Earth is an organization which consists of an elite group of scientists (led by Mr. Chen Liangzhong) and an ever increasing number of students who care about the environment, and most importantly, utilize the scientific method and various other methods to monitor, diagnose, and finally diminish or entirely eliminate environmental problems. When I came here, my motto was to “Improve Expeditions With Technology”. Thus, I brought an aging DJI Phantom 3 drone (;-), and the brand new Osmo Mobile Gimbal. This proved successful, because I could effectively document our miscellaneous expeditions, and as a side effect, they served as great way of making friends.

Cal State University at Channel Island。 Chemistry: The Central Science by Brown Chemistry by Zumdahl Stanford Online High School (honors and AP) CTY (AP only) 辅助学习的网站： Khanacademy.org Sciencegeek.net 4）怎样学好高中化学？ 建议用Princeton Review, Barron's, Dr Jung's, Sparknotes, Sterling's。 4）准备竞赛可用以下的网络资源： MIT courseware http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/chemistry/5-111-principles-of-chemical-science-fall-2008/video-lectures/ Art of Problem Solving Chem Woot training (for advanced level) http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/school/course/woot-chem 往年的旧题 http://www.acs.org/content/acs/en/education/students/highschool/olympiad/competition.html 4. The Cartoon Guide to Chemistry by Larry Gonick Molecules: The Elements and the Architecture of Everything by Theodore Gray Napoleon's Buttons: How 17 Molecules Changed History by Penny Le Couteur
