Magic Lantern - HDR Video Workflow For Canon Cameras

17:38
Magic Lantern HDR Video Workflow This is a short video showcasing my personal workflow, along with some discoveries about how to shoot better HDR, for the Magic Lantern firmware. This was all shot on the Canon T2i (550d) Footage download: minus.com/mo8xQ556o#1 Note: That footage can be streamed this is highly compressed and at a low frame rate/ the video is a little long, but I hope you will bear it! ha ha. EDIT: thanks to Ioda Media on the forums there is a different, more efficient, way to perform a very similar workflow In after effects, bring your footage into a timeline. Duplicate it until you have four copies of the footage. After duplicating it, take the top two layers, and pr-compose them. This will be your highlights, name the pre-comp as such. Repeat this pre-composition with the other two clips. these will be your lowlights/shadows. Go into your Highlights composition - take your top clip and set the blending mode to MULTIPLY. Move this top layer one frame forward. Your shadows will be highly crushed, and this will result in a very high contrast image this is what we want. Now, go into your low-lights/shadows pre-comp and select the top clip. Change the blending mode of this to SCREEN, and move it one frame forward. This will do the exact opposite of what we did in the highlights comp. Instead of making a high-contrast image with the highlights preserved. We made a high-contrast image with the shadows preserved. Next you can do the luma key as shown in this video. I feel as though this results in much less ghosting etc. than the current method I have here. I will be uploading slightly modified tutorial soon (Probably just adding something to the end of this one :) ) EDIT2: Malcolm Debono on the forums suggested shooting at 48FPS and I realized that this is totally possible. With the latest magic lantern hack; you can choose your framerate in small increments. so, it is theoretically possible to shoot at 48FPS @720P

How good is RAW video? (Canon 5D mark ii)

05:57
In this video, I test the new RAW video recording with the Canon 5D mark ii. Raw video recording gives you uncompressed video, which looks like it was shot with a big budget camera! To achieve this, you need to download and install the Magic Lantern hack in to your camera, and download the RAW build. You can read more about it here: http://www.magiclantern.fm/ PS. Be careful when installing the hack, because it may damage your camera. Since the RAW hack on the Canon 5D mark ii doesn't support FULL HD video capture when using the whole sensor, I shot everything in 2.35:1. To capture RAW video, you need a really fast CF/SD card. It's quite complicated to work with the RAW files in post production, but since it's RAW, it's a dream to colorcorrect the videos :) Thomas Leypoldt is a composer, and he have made the music for several of my videos. He does actually have a Youtube channel where he uploads his great filmatic soundtracks. I feel privileged to have a personal soundtrack. Thanks Thomas :) Check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArVP6nlZEAE If your want to stay tuned with our videos, you can subscribe here on Youtube. Convert Canon 5d H264 footage, using 5dtoRGB, Resolve, Mpeg Streamclip, Magic Bullet Shooter - 2013

07:07
This shows how to convert canon 5d h264 footage into a more edit friendly format. Even though most edit programs can edit fine with the h264, there are many advantages to converting it to a much better codec such as prores 422. This video also shows how important it is to convert your footage to the right colour space, such as rec 709 or rec 601. Its also shows a very basic comparison in Adobe After Effects between Davinci resolve, 5dtorgb, Mepg Stream clip and Magic Bullet Shooter. www.chriscory.co.uk

HDR workflow - large

00:19
This is a "test" clip created using a single RED RAW file to create pseudo HDR result. Much is lacking in the software to process the files (flash/noise) but it shows promise for saving "bad" shots or to create new looks. Please note, I'm aware of the lens flare in the shot. The test was to see if we could recover an over blown shot with a HDR workflow. More to come.

In this video I discuss with Martin from Baselight about how HDR is taking shape in their ecosystem. Martin tells us how their tools have been optimised for a hybrid HDR/SDR workflow. We also discuss codec, Log or RAW and how well they for for targeting HDR. We also discuss Ang Lee for film with its super high requirements and how Baselight has new options to allow this today. Finally we discuss FreeLight, an onset tool based on the baselight toolset. Sounds very interesting. Magic Lantern Raw Video Round-Trip Da Vinci Resolve 9.1.4 to Adobe Premiere Tutorial

16:39
UPDATE! With newer ML footage, it's much easier. If your footage is recent and named something like "M04-0843" rather than "M000000" then you need to do nothing to rename the folders and can skip the command-line or manual-renaming step. Sorry about my bad English! 1. Use RawMagic convert RAW to CinemaDNG image sequence. Use a distinct parent folder (I used shot date and card number). 2. Create ../source folder, and for each image sequence (in Terminal) rename the directory names from M00000 etc to current-dir-M00000: for i in *;do mv $i ../../sources/$(basename $(dirname $PWD))-$i;done 3. Import into Da Vinci Resolve 4. Set Master Project Settings, Assist using reel names from the: (Source clip file pathname). This is why you need the distinct folder name. 5. Use Deliver to create proxies 6. Use Conform to export timeline 7. Import FCP XML in Premiere 8. The project tab, you should see the XML filename, and inside it Master timeline from Resolve. Open the timeline, make edits. 9. Export Final Cut Pro XML, Import in Resolve.

Make video look cinematic using Adobe Premiere Pro CC Or CS6. A video on how to make video look a lot more clearer, more contrasty and over all more interesting ideal for a short film. We use Adobe Premiere Pro CC and go through the steps of creating a project & sequence. After that we import our footage and learn how to set the start & end points by cutting. We then use the three way color correcter or magic bullet's Colorstina 2 to professionally color grade our footage by adding saturation, warm & cold colors and finally contrast while still achieving the maximum dynamic range possible. For my footage i also sharpened it as i shot with a flat picture profile similar to Canon C-log or cinestyle presets. Views enjoy being able to have a anomorphic aspect ratio to create a more cinematic look. We do this by creating a second video sequence with a low vertical pixel count to crop the video to a narrower aspect ratio. I have shown how to do this without un doing any previews effects simply by copying & pasting the graded footage into the new sequence. To finalize the tutorial i explain how to export the video correctly in the standard H.264 codec with a choice of compression depending on if you favor quality or low life size to make it easier to upload to youtube. I have used the Adobe Creative Suite for many years now and can conclude that it is the most reliable and most efficient program i have used. I have previously struggled with Sony Vegas Pro 11 but it's crashes and sometimes inability to even render my footage turned me to Premiere. For professional uses i normally use Final Cut Pro X on a maxed out spec 2013 27'' iMac with an Intel i7 6 core processor & 16gb ram. For home use i stick with Premiere Pr CC on my humble HP Pavillion G6 1200SA (custom spec) laptop. After getting it i maxed the ram out to the full 8GB of corsair RAM, installed an OCZ Agility 3 60GB solid state drive then took out the dvd drive and replaced it with the 750GB hard drive that came with the laptop originally. For the operating system at the time of this video i am running Windows 8.1 (preview) as i enjoy the modern UI and am waiting for the full Windows 8.1 to come out so i can upgrade to the retail version. 00:07
A video of the 14bit RAW video available on the Canon EOS 60D thanks to Magic Lantern and Marekk (http://www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=5653.0) This was recorded at 1728x724, approx 200 frames (with one dropped frame, purple artifact present) at 24p. I then used the adobe DNG converter and Adobe After Effects to compose the video. I used the Adobe Camera Raw engine to add a lot of noise reduction and masking (in this small scene, I actually like it) as well as to colour correct the frames. Upscaled to 1080/24p and then encoded to x264 lossless. Camera - Canon EOS 60D Lens - Canon EF-S 15-85mm f3.5-5.6 Memory Card - SanDisk Extreme 32GB SDHC Card (45MB/s, Class 10, UHS-I)

In this particular song "Losing It" he gives credit to the common man for keeping his local economy afloat by representing them in his video. Basically, his statement is he does it for them, all the fans of good music. Also special thanks to Mario "Purplle Haze" for the beat and 16 Bar's studio for the recording. This song was compose and written by John "Bay-B" Loggins & video directed and edited by Media Mogulz.
