Continuing exploration of my pmbo 2014 entry. This demo consists of 3 synchronized motors running from ac mains (110vrms @ 60hz) adjusted down with a variac and 12vrms (~34vpp) transformer to between 20vpp and 34vpp. Air core coils ~4.5 ohms each. Six coils total. Coils all wired in series. In this case the four coil motor is wired so that all electromagnet field polarities face the same direction at the same time, however it works with alternating the coil polarities too. Advantages: Scalable. Easy to build. Few parts. Relatively cheap. Interchangeable rotors. Safe at this scale. Disadvantages: Very inefficient. Magnetic bearing causes drag. AC cycles are not all used. Manual rotor start-up. Currently I have nine interchangeable rotor types with either two or four poles. The magnetic poles are arranged differently on each rotor type. Orientation of the rotors magnetic poles can either be all the same (all north out or all south out) or alternated (north south north south). Speed and timing is self governed by the magnetic field developed by the coils from the 60hz alternating current. Rpm is normally 900 but can be any harmonic of 3600 rpm. Rpm is primarily dictated by the number of poles on the rotor, the speed a which the operator gives the start-up spin and how quickly the rotor synchronizes. After the rotor synchronizes with the electromagnets there is no adjusting speed. Torque is dictated by input power and the number of rotor poles and electromagnets. Increase either or both and torque increases. What you need for one: Hot glue, sewing machine bobbin(s), 28 gauge wire, straw or cap, appropriate transformer(s) or ac wall-wart and magnets. For example the magnet requirement for a one coil two pole rotor arrangement would be one sphere magnet, two axial magnetized ring magnets and one diametrically magnetized ring magnet- all sized appropriately. Conclusion: A 3D printer would really help this hot glue mess out. As stated above this setup is very inefficient but... it makes up for that in FUN and it's easy and cheap. And yes it has been amusing. :)

After two days of testing various magnetic objects for the amount of force they exert when allowed into the vicinity of a 4 tesla (T) superconducting magnet, it was finally time to turn the old gal off. There are essentially two ways to do it: the long way - connecting the magnet to a special power supply and running it down - or the short way - by pushing the Big Red Button that is present in case of emergencies. We chose the latter. Why? Because we would never be using the magnet again and, well, because we wanted to see what would happen. After all, we are scientists. FAQ: 1. So what exactly is a quench? In a controlled quench - which this was because it was initiated using the magnet's built-in circuitry - all the electrical energy (tens of megajoules) is dumped as heat across diodes, causing all the liquid helium in the cryostat to expand and blow through a carbon "burst disk" located in a special duct atop the magnet. The circuit can be activated with an emergency button. It takes about 30 seconds for the field to decay to near zero. 2. Is it dangerous to the magnet to quench it? Yup. A quench is violent; vibration can damage the superconducting wire, for example. And air ice can get into the magnet turret via cryopumping if a new burst disk isn't installed in the magnet turret very soon after the quench. Air ice is as hard as steel, and really difficult to remove! 3. Is a quench dangerous to people? It could be. The helium gas vents at near supersonic speeds. Note the characteristic humming sound as it vents. (And you thought helium gas only made squeaky noises if you breathe it in and then talk like Mickey Mouse!) The helium gas is a shade above -269 C. Yes, C. It will freeze anything it touches. If you were to breathe in the gas your lungs would freeze and be massively damaged. That's why the quench duct vents atop the building, where the gas can dissipate into the atmosphere without coming into contact with anyone. 4. Can a quench go awry? Yup. If there is a blockage in the quench duct, or if something fails, e.g. because of the combination of ultra-cold temperatures (that tends to turn everything brittle, even steel) and vibration, then helium gas could end up somewhere it doesn't belong. Worst case would be helium pressure building up because of a blockage; that's akin to a bomb. Second worst would be helium gas blowing back into the magnet room because of a breach somewhere in the duct between the magnet and the roof. 5. Why did you quench it? The magnet was a decade old and no longer used for research. Weighing four tons and requiring expensive rigging to remove/ship, and with a scrap value only in the tens of thousands (there's not much of a market for old 4 T magnets), it was better for us to convert it into a "mock scanner," for practice functional MRI sessions. So the specialty equipment is still in use, just not as a scanner. 6. What happened to the scanner after the quench? We turned the old magnet cryostat into a "mock", or zero field, scanner for training functional MRI subjects. It's still working in this capacity and will be for a long time. We donated the old electronics and patient bed to the manufacturer to support the three or four existing 4 T magnets still out there. 7. Why didn't you donate the magnet, or sell it to someone who could use it as an MRI? The cryostat is steel on the outside, lots of Mylar insulation and other gubbins on the inside. The wire is a superconductor, Nb-Ti alloy. The whole thing weighs about 4 tons. It's a lot of money to crane/move these behemoths. The scrap value is far less than the cost to move it, and the cost to someone else who wanted to use it would be about $200,000 just to remove it from the current location. How much more it would cost to ship and re-install depends on the journey, but there aren't many organizations who would pay hundreds of thousands for something that is essentially obsolete. Luckily for us, we had need of a mock scanner. 8. Why did you waste all that helium? Isn't there a shortage? There isn't a shortage of helium per se - it's the second-most abundant element in the universe, after hydrogen. The shortage is specifically liquid helium, and the reasons for the shortage are entirely financial/political reasons. Helium is recovered as a by-product of some natural gas and oil operations, but there are other ways to capture it, except that they cost more money. 9. But couldn't you have captured the helium for reprocessing? There's no easy way to push liquid helium out of a supercon magnet; they aren't designed that way. And capturing all that gas would require a truly massive recovery vessel. The expense would be hundreds of times the value of the liquid helium. Some MRI facilities - if they have a lot of magnets near to each other - may have a recovery system "plumbed in," but the cost of such as system is prohibitive for a single MRI magnet.

See abstract below. ------------------------------------------------- Discovery of the chiral Majorana fermion and its application to topological quantum computing ------------------------------------------------- Majorana fermion is a hypothetical fermionic particle which is its own anti-particle. Intense research efforts focus on its experimental observation as a fundamental particle in high energy physics and as a quasi-particle in condensed matter systems. We have theoretically predicted the chiral Majorana fermion in a hybrid structure of quantum anomalous Hall thin film coupled with a conventional superconductor, and proposed the half-integer quantized conductance plateau as its compelling signature. Recently, this theoretical prediction has been experimentally realized in magnetically doped topological insulator coupled with Nb superconductor and the half plateau quantization has been observed. I shall discuss a new proposal to braid the chiral Majorana fermion in a Corbino device geometry. The discovery of the chiral Majorana fermion leads to new avenues towards topological quantum computing, which could be much faster compared to Majorana zero modes.

Everybody already got the chance to practice his/her drawing skills on a magic drawing board. With the help of a pen, containing a small magnet attracting the board’s iron fillings, the user can draw lines or more complex shapes, as shown in the first part of the video. Our research team adapted this simple principle to build up a microscopic magnetic board by combining a superconductor, a material capable of carrying electrical currents without energy losses, and a magnetic material. This is shown in the second part of the video. How does it work? The superconductor can host tiny magnets acting as the magnetic pen, and a thin layer of magnetic material will play the role of the magic board. In this way, we are capable of recording traces of only a few millionths of meter! Our findings provide a powerful, though appealingly simple, tool to visualise and track the footsteps of the rather elusive magnetic flux in superconductors, even after superconductivity has disappeared. This helps to understand the magnetic flux dynamics, keeping in mind that this is a key field of study in order to improve applications of superconductivity, such as superconducting wires and powerful magnets. Experiment into whether the infinity symbol prominent in many world cultures and religions can have an effect on plant growth. 30 watercress seeds were placed into each of 8 plant pots. The infinity symbol was "drawn in the air" using my finger over each of 4 of these plant pots for 1 minute per day. Watering took place on a daily basis, and after 5 days plants were harvested to see if there was any difference between plants in each group. As we drove along one stretch of the road, the car driver told us that we are now passing through 'a magnetic field area' and he will stop the car and put it on neutral gear. He will not be pressing the accelerator pedal, but will hold the steering wheel to control the bus movement. Suddenly, as if by magic, the bus moved and started to gain speed, as it moved on. This is moving up a hilly road and not downhill. The guide reminded us that the magnetic power of the surrounding mountain is pulling the car uphill. The car gained speed and it even reached as fast as 75 miles/hr (120 km/hr). We believed him and was amazed when we saw puddle of water moving uphill. This reminded me of my favorite magician, David Copperfield and his creative and fantastic illusions. The driver demonstrated this act on another stretch of road, on our way back to Madinah.
