MLA Works Cited Page: Hanging Indent
Update: 4-2-16: Thanks for all your thanks and comments. I finally got around to uploading a shorter one (too much blah, blah, you were right if you said that). I still can't get the resolution figured out on some of it, but until then, this one is much more to the point. 67 seconds. Hopefully, I'll figure out the resolution and do "how to fix a comma splice in less than two minutes." Check out the new one here: https://youtu.be/-Brzd0B-P5s No, I'm no video expert, and I sound a little dorky--I'm at one with my exuberance over all things English-y, but I hope this will help. Be patient and kind--it's my first instructional video.

MLA 8 -- The Hanging Indent
This one can be tricky. It is usually found under "Paragraph" and then "Indents and Spacing" and then finally "Special". In "Special" you should see three options: none, First line, and Hanging. Hanging is what we use for the Works Cited page only. This lets your reader sort through your Works Cited page very quickly, as the author's last name always comes first, and will be "sticking out" thanks to the Hanging format. Congrats, you've formatted to MLA standards! You're a scholar now!

If you leave a comment complaining about that statement, then I will delete your comment. Go work on your paper. (Also, you don't see my students complaining about that "All men are created equal line" in our most famous national document.) Set up your spacing, then write a body paragraph using short and long quotes from a novel or short story in MLA style. I have made a new version of this video that is easy to read. This tutorial is going to show you how to indent in Word. Step # 1 -- Using a Shortcut One of the most popular indents is placing a short space before the text of a paragraph begins. The easiest way to do this is to click before the text in the paragraph and press the "tab" key on the keyboard. An indent will appear and the "First Line Indent" marker on the ruler at the top will move along the ruler. Step # 2 -- Manually Create an Indent We'll go back a step now by pressing "Control" and "Z" to show you how to make an indent manually. Click the "First Line Indent" marker and drag it along the ruler, as you go an indent will appear in whatever paragraph your cursor is in. To apply this type of indent to the whole file, press "Control" and "A" to select everything, and more the marker again. Step # 3 -- Creating a Hanging Indent To indent all of the text in a paragraph you will need to use the "Hanging Indent Marker" which is the middle marker on the ruler. Undo the changes we just made and use this marker to change the hanging indent, again to apply this indent to the whole document, select everything and repeat. Step # 4 -- Indenting Everything To indent the whole paragraph you should use the lowermost marker. Undo the changes once again and now click this marker and drag it across. To apply this sort of indent to the whole document you need to select all again and repeat the process. These are the steps for using indent in Word.

APA Hacks: Hanging Indents
Create a hanging indent for your reference citations in Microsoft Word. Transcript: How can you make hanging indents that look good in your APA reference list? A couple of settings and you are set. In this example, I am using Microsoft Word 2010. Select your entries or make sure your cursor is at the point in your text where the reference entries begin or select entries that need to be formatted. The first step is to find the small icon on the paragraph tab to bring up the paragraph dialog box. When the dialog box appears, find the section for “indentation” and use the dropdown to find “hanging.” Next, in the spacing section, set “before” and “after” to 0. Choose line-spacing, and select “double.” Tick the box for “Don’t add space between paragraphs of the same style.” Click okay and every reference entry you type will be appropriately set as a hanging indent. Be sure you use the “enter” key only at the end of each entry. These settings can be automated somewhat using the “Styles” function. Just select a reference entry that is correctly formatted. Go to “styles” and pull down the menu. Select “Save selection” as a new quick style, give it a name in the dialog box, and boom! Every time you type an entry, just use the APA style to correctly format it. One more trick—if you have everything set to double-space and all you need to do is create the hanging indent, use control and T (on a Mac, use Command plus T).

This is section 3 where I want to talk to you a little bit about working with indents. There are going to be times when you want to indent the left side of a paragraph. Normally you’d hit the Tab key to do that but notice that that will actually only indent the first line and only indents it at the half inch mark. You’re going to want to indent the whole thing or maybe you want to indent both sides. So let me show you how the indents work. Normally if you were in a paragraph and you wanted to indent the first line you would just hit the Tab key on your keyboard. That’s certainly okay to do. Tab stops at every half inch on the ruler. So if you look at your ruler you’ve got this top indent here called a First line indent and you’ve indented the first line at the half inch mark. That’s not going to help very much if you wanted to indent this line at ¾ of an inch or it’s not going to help you if you wanted to indent the whole left side of that paragraph. So that’s where the indents are going to come into play. Here’s how they work. The top one, the arrow that points down is called a first line indent. It will indent the first line of every paragraph you have selected. So let me show you how that works. I’m going to select these top two paragraphs and I’m just going to pull this over to ¾ of an inch like this and now both paragraphs the first line only is indented at ¾ of an inch. Alright let me undo that one. The next one I want to show you is the arrow that points up right here. That’s called a Hanging Indent. That means that the first line is going to stay and everything else is going to be indented. So I’m going to grab that one. Notice I’m not going to grab the square on the bottom because the square on the bottom will move them both. But see how the first line stayed and everything else is indented now? Can you think of a good example of a hanging indent? How about numbers? I don’t know if you noticed but when we typed in numbers that created a hanging indent. Let me show you that real quick. I’m going to go to File and create a new blank document for a second. We had typed in four first names earlier. We had Allen, Bob, Carol, and Doug. Now if I select these and I turn on the numbers look at your indents up here. The way they work with numbers is the first one controls the number and this one actually controls the text next to the number. So if I decided that I needed more space between the number and the text I would grab the one that points up and drag over. See that? Or if I decided the number should be closer to the left margin I can drag back over like this. So it works the same way with numbers. Let me flip back over to where we were, our Burke Flyer. Now the little box on the bottom is going to move them both. So if I click the box and move it over, see how they’re both moving? I’m going to go ahead and undo that and put these back together. Let’s say I wanted to indent the whole left margin of both of these paragraphs. As long as I grab this little box on the bottom, notice I’m indenting the whole left margin there. There’s also an indent over on the right. So if you wanted to pull this in you’ll see that you can now make a paragraph or two actually stand out a little bit because you’ve changed the margins for those two paragraphs only. Notice it didn’t affect any of the other areas of my document. Sorry, we couldn't fit the entire video transcription here since YouTube only allows 5000 characters.
