Oracle Heap Tables or SQL Server Clustered Indexes

01:12:17
Live discussion between Jonathan Lewis and Grant Fritchey. Thurs 7th June 2012 Oracle and SQL Server may both share a common language, but certain things are handled quite differently. Jonathan Lewis (OakTable Network, Oracle Ace Director) is used to seeing heap tables (almost) everywhere, but Grant Fritchey (Microsoft SQL Server MVP) is used to seeing clustered indexes (almost) everywhere. But which arrangement performs better? And is comparative performance even the right thing to measure? In this live discussion, these two heavyweights in their respective technology areas will debate the pros and cons of Oracle Heap Tables and SQL Clustered Indexes. Jonathan and Grant may even play a few unexpected cards during the discussion. Be prepared for a lively exchange which will not only entertain, but will teach you key concepts on Oracle and SQL Server. 01 Overview of table Partition in oracle

07:26
Partitioning enhances the performance, manageability, and availability of a wide variety of applications and helps reduce the total cost of ownership for storing large amounts of data. Partitioning allows tables, indexes, and index-organized tables to be subdivided into smaller pieces, enabling these database objects to be managed and accessed at a finer level of granularity. Oracle provides a rich variety of partitioning strategies and extensions to address every business requirement. Moreover, since it is entirely transparent, partitioning can be applied to almost any application without the need for potentially expensive and time consuming application changes. Partitioning allows a table, index, or index-organized table to be subdivided into smaller pieces, where each piece of such a database object is called a partition. Each partition has its own name, and may optionally have its own storage characteristics. From the perspective of a database administrator, a partitioned object has multiple pieces that can be managed either collectively or individually. This gives the administrator considerable flexibility in managing partitioned objects. However, from the perspective of the application, a partitioned table is identical to a non-partitioned table; no modifications are necessary when accessing a partitioned table using SQL queries and DML statements. Partitioning Key ======================== Each row in a partitioned table is unambiguously assigned to a single partition. The partitioning key is comprised of one or more columns that determine the partition where each row will be stored. Oracle automatically directs insert, update, and delete operations to the appropriate partition through the use of the partitioning key. When to Partition a Table ========================== Here are some suggestions for when to partition a table: Tables greater than 2 GB should always be considered as candidates for partitioning. Tables containing historical data, in which new data is added into the newest partition. A typical example is a historical table where only the current month's data is updatable and the other 11 months are read only. When the contents of a table need to be distributed across different types of storage devices. When to Partition an Index ============================= Here are some suggestions for when to consider partitioning an index: Avoid rebuilding the entire index when data is removed. Perform maintenance on parts of the data without invalidating the entire index. Reduce the impact of index skew caused by an index on a column with a monotonically increasing value. Partitioned Index-Organized Tables =================================== Partitioned index-organized tables are very useful for providing improved performance, manageability, and availability for index-organized tables. For partitioning an index-organized table: ============================================ Partition columns must be a subset of the primary key columns Secondary indexes can be partitioned (both locally and globally) OVERFLOW data segments are always equi-partitioned with the table partitions See Also: Oracle Database Concepts for more information about index-organized tables System Partitioning System partitioning enables application-controlled partitioning without having the database controlling the data placement. The database simply provides the ability to break down a table into partitions without knowing what the individual partitions are going to be used for. All aspects of partitioning have to be controlled by the application. For example, an insertion into a system partitioned table without the explicit specification of a partition will fail. System partitioning provides the well-known benefits of partitioning (scalability, availability, and manageability), but the partitioning and actual data placement are controlled by the application. See Also: Oracle Database Data Cartridge Developer's Guide for more information about system partitioning Partitioning for Information Lifecycle Management Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) is concerned with managing data during its lifetime. Partitioning plays a key role in ILM because it enables groups of data (that is, partitions) to be distributed across different types of storage devices and managed individually.

Statistics in Oracle and SQL Server

01:28:28
The better the information that Oracle and SQL Server have about the data in a database, the better choices they can make on how to execute the SQL. Statistics are Oracle's and SQL Server's chief source of information. If this information is out of date, performance of queries will suffer. In their third live 'Oracle vs. SQL Server' discussion, Jonathan Lewis (Oracle Ace Director, OakTable Network) and Grant Fritchey (Microsoft SQL Server MVP) will look at statistics in Oracle and SQL Server. Do Oracle and SQL Server gather the same information? What does each optimizer use this information for? And how can Oracle and SQL Server administrators override the defaults for better (or worse) performance? These are just some of the questions that Jonathan and Grant will try to answer in another not-to-be-missed session. As before, this will be a live discussion with limited supporting slides, and will conclude with a Q+A session with Jonathan and Grant. Be prepared for a lively exchange that will not only entertain, but will teach you key concepts on Oracle and SQL Server. For our complete archive please go to http://www.red-gate.com/oracle-webinars

Ten SQL Tricks that You Didn’t Think Were Possible (Lukas Eder)

45:10
SQL is the winning language of Big Data. Whether you’re running a classic relational database, a column store (“NewSQL”), or a non-relational storage system (“NoSQL”), a powerful, declarative, SQL-based query language makes the difference. The SQL standard has evolved drastically in the past decades, and so have its commercial and open source implementations. In this fast-paced talk, we’re going to look at very peculiar and interesting data problems and how we can solve them with SQL. We’ll explore common table expressions, hierarchical SQL, table-valued functions, lateral joins, row value expressions, window functions, and advanced data types, such as XML and JSON. And we’ll look at Oracle’s mysterious MODEL and MATCH_RECOGNIZE clauses, devices whose mystery is only exceeded by their power. Most importantly, however, we’re going to learn that everyone can write advanced SQL. Once you learn the basics in these tricks, you’re going to love SQL even more.

Comparing Temporary Tables in Oracle and SQL Server

01:11:08
Presented by Jonathan Lewis (Oracle ACE Director, OakTable) and Grant Fritchey (SQL Server MVP) Thurs 11th October 2012 Summary Temporary tables are often used in applications for processes that are difficult to complete in a single pass. They are widely used in SQL Server development and can be local and global. In Oracle temporary tables are created with a static global definition, but are used to hold temporary local content. But is this the only difference in temporary tables in Oracle and SQL Server? What about the performance impacts/gains for using temporary tables, and does this differ in Oracle and SQL Server? Once again Jonathan Lewis (Oracle Ace Director, OakTable Network) and Grant Fritchey (Microsoft SQL Server MVP) will host a live discussion on Oracle and SQL Server, this time in relation to temporary tables. Will they agree on some common ground? Or will it be an out and out argument? Either way, be prepared for a lively exchange that will not only entertain, but will teach you key concepts on Oracle and SQL Server. A Q+A session with Jonathan and Grant will follow the presentation. For our complete archive, and to sign up for upcoming webinars please go to http://www.red-gate.com/oracle-webinars

Advanced SQL and the Power of Rewriting Queries

57:53
Presented by Tony Andrews, Themis Inc. Often times there can 4,5,6 different ways to write an SQL query and get the same results back. What makes one better than any of the others, and is there any ones that are always better, or always worse? Sometimes rewriting 1 predicate in an SQL statement can cause optimization to change. This presentation breaks down many examples of query rewrites and how they can affect performance and optimization. Being strong in SQL is a great skill when it comes to performance and tuning of queries. Tony Andrews has more than 25 years’ experience in the development of relational database applications. Most of this time, he has provided development and consulting services to Fortune 500 companies and government agencies. Tony has written literally thousands of queries and programs during his development years, and has also served as a database analyst. For the last 10 years, Tony has been splitting his time between performance and tuning consulting engagements along with training. His main focus is to teach today’s developers the ways of RDMS application design, development and SQL programming -- always with a special emphasis on improving performance. He is a current IBM Champion, and regular speaker at many regional user groups, IDUG NA, and IDUG EMEA. He is also the author of a book for developers titled ‘DB2 SQL Tuning Tips for z/OS Developers’.

Oracle Database Performance Tuning - Optimizer Statistics Gathering

04:51
In this video we explain how to gather the database optimizer statistics #performancetuning, #oracledatabase, #oracle, #database, #optimizerstatistics, #learning, About Optimizer Statistics Collection In Oracle Database, optimizer statistics collection is the gathering of optimizer statistics for database objects, including fixed objects. The database can collect optimizer statistics automatically. You can also collect them manually using the DBMS_STATS package. Purpose of Optimizer Statistics Collection The contents of tables and associated indexes change frequently, which can lead the optimizer to choose suboptimal execution plan for queries. To avoid potential performance issues, statistics must be kept current. To minimize DBA involvement, Oracle Database automatically gathers optimizer statistics at various times. Some automatic options are configurable, such enabling AutoTask to run DBMS_STATS. Stats collection Stats gathering database performance tuning, 10g, 11g 12c database administration
