What is Strategic Planning? Here’s the definition… It is a process initiated by an ENTITY to establish a PLAN for accomplishment of the overall GOALS. Are you bored yet? I know I am. Ok. Let’s break this down and make it more fun and simple. There are 3 main elements to any strategic plan: #1 is YOU. You are the entity, aka the leader. #2 is the PLAN. #3 is the GOAL. So you always want to start with the goal, which in essence, is the BIG PICTURE. What is the end game that you want to achieve? Work on this for as long as it takes until you get clarity. When you are crystal clear on your expected outcome, you will be able to lead yourself and your team while sailing through the ups and downs. Once you come up with a clear big picture, then you reverse engineer it to map out the step by step master plan. Doing this will help you create a path and ensure that you always have a point of FOCUS. It is normal to encounter other enticing opportunities during your success journey. But you got to stay focused on your Big Picture. You and Your team depend on You to get to the end game. In my previous company, we grew very fast when we first started out. We were getting a lot of recognition among the trade and sales kept rolling in. One day, one of the “Big Players” within the industry approached me and proposed to partner up. They were a very well known and respected company within our region, which was California and neighboring states. The benefits seemed very attractive… Our Brand would get immediately recognized as a prestigious name, and They had more distribution centers which would allow us to increase our sales volume instantly. The draw backs were… They also carried hundreds of other brands and we’d become one of the sub-brands under their umbrella; and Their company mission was different from ours. They’ve been a successful regional distributor for several decades and were happy to stay that way. Our vision was to build an international distribution and become a reputable brand name. Although the census were equally split during my decision making process, I chose to decline the offer to follow the path that aligned with our Big Picture. For people to be able to do business with you, they first need to know that you exist. Number one, influencer marketing. Find websites, bloggers, YouTubers, fan pages, that speak to the same audience that you do, and build a relationship. So one example, Casey Neistat, 9.4 million subscribers. "Francine only watches kids' shows that are in Spanish, so I tweeted that it's hard to find kids' shows in Spanish on Netflix. Veronica works for a Spanish kids show and sent Francine all this. Veronica, thank you." - Casey Neistat Notice how Veronica was being human and authentic, and how she wasn't salesy and sleazy? Being authentic is vital. Veronica now has her foot in the door because she listened. Collaboration is everything online. Similar to influencer marketing, joint ventures also involve engaging with brands with similar target audiences. Think about win-win situation like mail exchanging. If you had a similar amount of newsletter subscribers, you could do email exchange. When your featured on their newsletter and you feature them on yours. Hosting joint events. If you have similar audiences, hosting events together could save on a lot of costs as events can get really costly at the end of the day. One example might be a protein powder manufacturer and a local gym partnering up to host an event together. Public relations. The job of the PR agency as opposed to an advertising agency is that a PR agency gets you exposure in the form of editorial, being published on blogs, news websites, on YouTube channels. This is known as earned media or free media. A stronger corporate image can boost your stock price by up to six percent. The same logic can be applied to startups looking for investors. If you had six percent increase in investors saying yes, would you take that? Another example, do you guys know Dragon's Den? It's a show where entrepreneurs have three minutes to pitch their ideas to five multi-millionaires who then have opportunity to invest their own money into the business. So a lot of the times these entrepreneurs get massive offers just to the shock of the world when they decline it. And at the end of the day, the objective was not to get funding from investors, but to rather get the PR that appearing on the show would give. Being controversial. Nothing better than controversy to get your brand noticed. Let me show you the best example that I could find about being controversial. Excerpt from ad example: "So, how do you make the world believe your poop doesn't stink? Or in fact that you never poop at all? Poo-pourri. Poo-pourri is the before you go toilet spray that has proven to trap those embarrassing odors at the source, and save relationships." And the final point that I have, affiliate marketing. Getting others to sell your product and giving them a commission for sale is a great way of driving awareness and sales. You can either create your own affiliate program by using tools like SamCart, or you can partner up with an affiliate network and let them help you with the technical aspect. New Names & Nicknames in Higher Ed Brands

This week, Ken completes his 3-part review of higher ed branding in 2015 with a look at “New Names & Nicknames,” from DMZ to uVic! Without a doubt, institutions are loathe to lose decades of brand equity and recognition by changing their names. Generally it occurs only when the institution’s mandate has changed significantly, such as when a college gains university status, or an institute becomes a polytechnic. (Most recently it was SIAST becoming Saskatchewan Polytechnic.) For years we’ve also seen a pretty widespread trend toward dropping adjectives like “regional” and “community” from college names, and minimizing or eliminating the use of the word “college” itself. Last spring, Saskatchewan’s Southeast Regional College launched a bright new brand identity without the word “Regional.” The AUCC rechristened itself “Universities Canada” last year, launching a “dynamic” new visual identity using a diamond rather than a square, to symbolize convergence, such as at a crossroads, a town square, or a university quad. https://youtu.be/cYeXSlzYIsw Last year we also saw Fanshawe College announce the Don Smith School of Building Technology, UBC name the Peter A. Allard School of Law, and Wilfrid Laurier University rename the Laziridis School of Business & Economics. Higher ed more often shortens names than changing them completely, such as when Ryerson University’s Digital Media Zone adopted the official name “DMZ” last spring. Ryerson University itself launched a refreshed visual identity last summer, featuring fresh new colours, a slightly modernized typeface, and a bit of “out of the box” symbolism. The positioning strategy emphasizes 5 key differentiators from other Toronto institutions, and we look at two quick brand videos to see it in action. In keeping with our “nicknames” topic, Ryerson also revealed two abbreviated logos for use in informal situations, and social media. The dynamic new brand includes refreshed colours, a new wordmark, and new graphic elements including a wavy “connective thread” and some playful birds, martlets, drawn from the coat of arms. https://youtu.be/gsARvoBJCoU One of the challenges to adopting a shorter name for marketing purposes is opposition from internal and external stakeholders. I think perhaps uVic learned from the example set by Western University back in 2012. Critics thought the name geographically inaccurate, although frankly there are dozens of “Northwesterns” and “Southwesterns” in the eastern US. The new identity solved many technical issues, and introduced an elegant system of sub-brands that is the nicest I have seen anywhere. So we’ve seen colleges and universities use several strategies to pave the way for a new name or brand. UCFV adopted an acronym, Malaspina a memorable icon, CBU stripped away all semblance of a logo, and uVic made it clear that the old logo will continue in widespread use. The real work of rebranding an academic community isn’t creative work at all; the most challenging aspects are consultation, research, consensus building, and easing the campus into a new identity. Too many top-tier ad agencies have underestimated this challenge, or badly mishandled it.
