Product managers are one of the toughest roles to define and hire for, in part because depending on the company and the project, they perform a wide variety of activities. It can be helpful to think of the role as five characters — the Explorer, the Analyst, the Planner, the Advocate, and the Sherpa. Product Manager - 10 Essential Skills to Master (In 2018)

06:51
Product Management is a fast-growing and niche area to develop a career in. Naturally, there are some essential skills that can get you to be the very best of the lot. While the need for Product Managers is increasing by the day - in startups, tech companies and other large companies alike - the supply in India is currently only limited to a few thousands and compares poorly to countries such as the US. As per the Google and Accel Partners SAAS Report, there are roughly 36,000 Product Managers in India and the number is expected to increase to about 68,000 Product Managers by 2020. So, the need is apparent. But what does one have to do to get there? How to become a Product Manager? A common misconception is that Product Managers need to only master certain hard skills such as business understanding, tech and data. However, this would only mean the job is half done. To be a successful Product Manager you must have some soft skills too. These include communication, negotiation and leading without authority among many others. But don't worry about backgrounds, as Product Managers have been known to have diverse work and educational experience prior to making the transition into Product Management. Ravijot Chugh, Co-Founder and Product Head at UpGrad, explains in this 3rd part of the Careers-In-Shorts Series what these key skills are and how one can ace them to get on the road to being a great Product Manager. Basic tech skills for a Product Manager

01:16:14
We see lots of entrepreneurs struggling to explain their product in a clear and concise way. As a direct consequence, they often don't know how to work with designers and developers because they don't speak their language. The role of a good entrepreneur is to break those barriers when it comes to his product. Otherwise, he won't be able to work correctly with the rest of his team. In this workshop, we will cover all the important steps in the conception of a technical product: • Product pitch: precisely define your value proposition (we'll give lots of examples) • Mockup: make a basic mockup of your app using Sketch • Database: what's the core database scheme of your product • User stories: write and organise your user stories on Trello. As an entrepreneur, this workshop will give you a simple methodology to precisely define the product you want to build and work efficiently with developers and designers without unnecessary processes or misunderstandings. We will take lots of real-life example (Product Hunt, Airbnb, etc..) to illustrate this workshop. --- Go further with Le Wagon and learn HTML, CSS, ruby, Rails, Javascript, Github, APIs and much more 🚀 during our 2 month full-time immersive bootcamp 👉 https://www.lewagon.com/program Le Wagon is the first bootcamp bringing technical skills to creative entrepreneurs in London. Who is a Product Manager and What do they do? [Career Insights]

07:54
The role of a product manager is crucial but also one of the least understood ones. What does a product manager really do? Is he more of a data analyst? Or someone who deals with the tech aspects of product, leading the team of engineers? Or does the product manager largely concern himself/herself with user experience, design or the overall business strategy? Mind-boggling isn't it? No wonder the role is difficult to understand for most. In this video, Ravijot Chugh, Co-Founder and Product Head at UpGrad, explains in detail the various responsibilities a Product Manager has, and that you need to execute to the best of your ability to be a good PM. If you want to bag one among the thousands of highly coveted openings for Product Managers between now and 2020 (only to grow exponentially even after), you need to start upgrading your existing skills and mastering these key skills. Product Managers are often referred to as mini-CEOs of the product. This is why, at tech companies, startups and large MNCs that are now diversifying, alike, the role of Product Managers is lucrative and one of the most important in the organization. These are Exploration, Analysis, Critique and Evangelism. No matter what stage in the product life cycle, simultaneously and deliberately viewing your product through these perspectives will help avoid common pitfalls and help deliver a superior solution. Ken Sandy talked about how to learn the relative advantages of each of the four mindsets: how Exploration drives innovation, Analysis drives understanding, Critique identifies risks, and Evangelism provides a path to delivery. He also discussed how to put execution in context, as your role is to build the right product, not to build the product right, and how to understand your "go-to" strengths vs. where you need to consciously practice. Ken Sandy is a 20-year veteran in the consumer internet industry. He has led Product Management teams at an executive level at both fast-growth, start-up companies looking to break into new markets, and at incumbents attempting digital transformations amidst industry disruption. Ken is currently a Product Consultant and Executive Coach. Previously, Ken was Vice President of Product at Lynda.com - an online education company acquired by LinkedIn. Over the last five years, this term has gotten wildly out of control. People want to be in Growth and companies want to hire Growth roles. However, from Willie's experience talking to many people who want to hop in the field as well as talking to numerous companies, he's found most of the people who talk about Growth actually have no idea what it is. A big part of what causes this are the lack of definitions. This talk went over clear definitions and why Growth is much more of a Product function than it is a Marketing one. On top of going over how Growth is fundamentally different from Marketing, it also went over how Growth Product Management can be quite different from feature or traditional Product Management. Willie Tran is a Growth Product Manager at Dropbox where he works on implementing new features and experiments to drive revenue. Prior to Dropbox, he was the Head of Product at Testlio and helped scale the company from 7 to more than 60. ABOUT US: Product School is the world’s first tech business school. 3 Strategies to Pitch Product Management Ideas

02:52
If you would like to learn more about negotiating and other Product Manager skills, download our free resources and subscribe to our YouTube channel. http://280.gr/2hSR5Ae In this video 280 Group CEO and Founder, Brian Lawley talks with Product Management Consultant and Trainer Bill Haines. Bill is an expert in positioning, messaging and influencing people. Bill is here to explain the three types of people who you are likely to encounter when pitching your Product Management idea as well as the strategy for dealing with each of them. Generally when you have a few ideas to pitch, there's one that you probably think is the best; that's important to keep in mind here. The first type of person that Bill describes are contrarians who feel the need to reject things/ideas. Next there are bonders who will latch on to the first idea they hear. Finally there are neutrals who will wait to hear every option before they make a decision. In order to strategize about how to pitch ideas to these types of people you need to observe personality types and plan around that. If you are pitching to a contrarian you should start with your worst idea because you know they are probably going to reject the first thing regardless of what it is. When speaking with a bonder, it makes sense to start with your best idea, you don't want them to become attached to one of your lesser ideas before they hear what you consider to be the best. If a person is truly neutral it wont' really matter what order you proceed in, but Bill recommends starting with your second best before pitching your best and then worst. It's now always so simple, but it's helpful to have some of these strategies in mind before pitching your Product Management ideas. Strong Engineering Culture, Strong Product Culture

20:49
What does culture have to do with building great products? In my opinion, everything. I’m a group product manager at Yelp, and in this presentation from MTP Engage, I look at why it’s so important to create a supportive culture where product people and engineers collaborate and trust each other. I manage a team of product managers and product designers, and while we have a high-performing workplace of product managers and engineers, we have a range of personalities, preferences, and communication styles which inevitably challenges how people work together. In my 15 years as a product manager I’ve learned that it’s always about the people, and empowering them to get things done without getting in each other’s way. This challenge expresses itself in many ways, but one I’ve noticed recently is in status differences between product and engineering. At some companies, the product team walks around like they own the place, while engineers scramble to get things done. At other companies, engineers dominate decision-making, and product managers are just trying to keep up with the scrum backlog. It’s a delicate balance to keep each team focused on what they do well and delivering value on time while remaining civil (and maybe even making friends!). I’ve been at Yelp for six years, and here I’ve had a front-row seat to understanding – and in my own small way influencing – healthy product/engineering relationships. Yelp has a really strong culture that enables the balance and generosity needed to be successful. Every company has its corporate values, and Yelp’s – to be tenacious, be unboring, play well with others – are tightly held and accurate (in my opinion). Those values also express themselves on the product and engineering teams. There are a few business practices that Yelp has developed and uses to maintain our fun, inclusive culture, these include everything from hackathons and off-sites to Yelp Love, an internal, open-source platform where you can leave coworkers digital “love” and shout outs. There are other important and less lighthearted aspects of our culture, and challenges still to be faced.
