This video shows the branding of calves, roping and you get to see cowboys at work doing what they enjoy. The cowboys rope the calf, brand them, vaccinate them and then let the calf go. Soon they are reunited with their mothers and taken back to eat the grass in the pastures surrounding the ranch. Branding takes a lot of people. Thank you to our wonderful family, neighbors and friends who came to help. Ranchers are now using freeze branding as a way to reliably ID their cattle without the traditional use of hot-iron brands. This method of branding with extremely cold irons is characterized by white hair replacing the natural hair coat in the branded area of cattle. Since its development, freeze branding has been used successfully when applied with the proper technique. Freeze branding destroys the natural pigments in hair thus producing the growth of white hair.

If you are new to ranching, or freeze branding, this how-to video will give you detailed steps of the tools needed, how to prep before the branding begins, how to use a cattle chute, and the entire process of freeze branding your cattle. Freeze branding is a safe and less traumatic process of branding cattle in order to protect against theft, keep track of health information for your cattle, and be able to identify the genetic lineage of the cattle in your herd. It is also a great way to make your mark (literally) and market your livestock.

Warning Never attempt to brand a cow if you are not well-trained in the technique. Step 1: Heat the iron Heat your branding iron in a wood fire until the end of the iron is ash-colored. Tip Do not use a forge or a coal fire to heat the iron. These may make the iron too hot. Step 2: Apply the iron Apply the hot iron to the animal's hair so that it burns the hair and the outer layer of skin. Work slowly and carefully. Tip Do not attempt to brand the animal with acids or other chemical agents. Step 3: Remove the iron Remove the iron. The brand, which should resemble saddle leather in color, will let others know that the cow belongs to you for the rest of its life. Did You Know? Some ranchers now identify their cattle with microchips implanted beneath the animal's skin.

The cattle branding process in Rio Vista, CA. Nate's friend decided that he had better things to do than follow through on his promise to help us, so that left Nate and I to process around 150 head of cattle. Trust me, it is not a 2 man job. Mixed breeds, all heifers a little less than a year old. Dumber than shit and grosser than hell, all of them. It was my job to herd them from one big holding corral into 2 smaller corrals, then single file into a chute. Using my loud voice, a cattle paddle and a hot shot (cattle prod), I eventually got the hang of it. Nate caught them in this squishing device thing, branded them, inoculated them with 3 shots, then ear tagged them. This particular cow we did right after a beer break. We ran the branding iron off a generator and it actually wasn't hot enough because we'd just turned it off. The smell of burnt cattle hair is absolutely awful. Anyway, imagine doing this process hundreds and hundreds of times. It makes you appreciate the process of how that hamburger gets onto your plate. However, after working with cattle, I now have zero respect for them as life forms. They are the grossest, stupidest animals I've ever seen. Sorry the camera job is a little dicey, I was trying to work and film at the same time.

Calves had to be immunized with two shots and branded by hot iron. It seems a little rough, but this is the way it is done for the last several centuries (with the exception of immunization). Watch the smooth motion of the teams - everybody knows his place and the system performs like a well oiled machine.

Watch more How to Raise Farm Animals videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/398233-How-to-Buy-Cattle-Brands Most states have laws governing the transfer of cattle brands. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when buying one. Step 1: Check for brands for sale Check with your state brand inspector's office or local governing agency to see if they keep a list of brands for sale. Older brands are often sold with ranches or by themselves. Step 2: Choose a distinctive brand Make sure the brand you are considering is distinctive and readily recognized. Tip Opt for a brand with open characters such as C or a bar. Closed characters such as A, B, or 8 tend to blotch and become hard to read. Step 3: Record the brand Record the acquired brand in your state brand inspection office or with the local governing agency. Remember, unrecorded brands offer little or no protection and result in confusion. Did You Know? The branding of cattle and livestock commenced before 2000 BCE.

Freeze branding is a safer and more effective way to brand your herd. It is easier to see from a longer distance away, and it lasts a lot longer than a traditional hot iron brand. Freeze branding uses liquid nitrogen to get the branding irons extremely cold so that the animal's hair follicles are frozen and the hair regrows white for maximum contrast. Watch this step-by-step video showing the freeze branding process from the friendly veterinarians at Animal Medical Center in Great Bend, Kansas.
