The Real Don Draper From 'Mad Men'?

8596 ratings | 1022932 views
Don Draper is a character that could only exist in fiction: impossibly handsome, endlessly talented, and crippled by alcoholism and other impulse-control problems. VICE was curious to see if there was any truth behind Mad Men protagonist, and that's how we found George Lois. A leader of the Creative Revolution, Lois helped create the campaign "I Want My MTV," and make companies like Xerox, Jiffy Lube, and Tommy Hilfiger household names. He also designed 92 iconic covers for Esquire. Lois is often referred to as an inspiration for Don Draper, but there are stark differences between the two. Here's his story. Why is the reporter’s voice so depressing 😅😅😅

Don Draper was a Creative Director not Art Director! There should be an editor to this weak and misleading video!
PaulAnthonyLeeds (5 days ago)
Always heard that David Ogilvy, Chris copywriter from Ogilvy & Mathers was who Draper was based off of. Is this not true or is Don a synthesis of many advertising people?

Take it from an ex-McCann-Erickson executive, George Lois is not the real life Don Draper. No one self promotes himself more than George Lois.

In fairness, Vice put a ? in the title of this video. The answer is no, he’s not the real Don Draper.

This guy is nothing like Don Draper. This guy also seems to have taken credit all the time for other peoples' work.
leeluv96 (2 months ago)
I did think Don was all that handsome. Now I could find some actors who are smokin hot but can they act? Then again for most of the show all Don did was frown and look like he was trying to hide his drunkenness like a 16 year old at bible camp. Also nearly all of the ad ideas on the show were terrible!!

Draper wasn't an art director, he was a copywriter and then a creative director, there is a distinction.
Christopher Smith (5 months ago)
The inspiration for Don Draper was a man named Bob Backer. Notice the similarity of the names. He worked for the same firm that was trying to get Don from early in the series and who eventually bought the company. Bob Backer is who wrote the Coke song. I knew even before the final episode that this is how it would play out.
Christopher Smith (5 months ago)
My mistake-just looked it up, his name was Bill Backer, and he worked for McCann Erickson.
ronoccc (5 months ago)
Would hardly call Don a 'workaholic' he spends plenty of time sleeping, drinking, bunking off during the day to go see a mistress or go for a swim. Not to mention going missing for weeks at a time
Anonymouse (5 months ago)
Who is Don Draper? He won the world's most coveted award for Biggest Slut on Earth. A friggin whore, that's who. He sleeps with anything that moves. Monogamy is not in his vocabulary. He is such a pig.

Funny how George Lois designed 92 iconic covers for Esquire. And there are 92 episodes of Mad Men
bluedance lilly (10 months ago)
I associate Don with my own father. Not the same profession, but the common way of men then - respected at work while having a secret life of being disrespectful at home, tons of affairs and bailing on his family despite all his wife does for him. So selfish, but let off the hook for it. The epitome of sexism of the times.

He's not the art director--he's the creative director--Big difference.
MrBahBZ (11 months ago)
George Lois's story is completely unconvincing as a real-life analogue to Draper, or even a direct inspiration. Now, he seems like a spurned child pleading for relevance. His insistence on his greatness is closer to a roadside motel advertising that JFK once stopped his motorcade to drop a deuce in their outhouse than it is proof of his celebrity as the greatest ad-man. Step 1: don't make large posters saying you're better than a fictional character. You look like a loser.

I seen alot of TV series but none comes close to Mad Men so much Drama, Details and the shock factors.

Don Draper was NOT an art director. He was a copywriter and a creative director. Bill Bernbach was his hero. Great creative directors are writers, not often art directors. Now all the art directors out there are going to dis this.

I've always believed Lois was wrong when he claimed: "You learn nothing from mistakes." Of course you learn from mistakes. Mistakes are the greatest teachers. The cheapest mistakes are those you see others make, and crucially, understand what you're seeing. But Lois is an arch bullshitter. He apparently doesn't share credit. That's not smart. So he's self centred. Self centred people exaggerate and lie. I founded my own ad agency in the '80s. I built it up from a small graphics studio. I moved mysf to London and bought a Savile Row suit in the summer sale. I wrote great copy, did my own visuals and I pitched well enough to win some big accounts.  But my art was often the work of a network of graphic artists who I hired by the hour - per job. To answer my need to keep my overheads low, I founded the first virtual agency... or did I? To be honest, I've no idea. Maybe it had been done before. Who cares?  The ad business is about creating want, according to the Edward Bernays philosophy as exemplified by Gordon Gekko in that infamous speech to the investors in Teldark Paper, or was it Annacot Steel? Again, who cares? If you need anecdotes to impress people, the biggest lessons you haven't learned are in the mirror ;))

I saw the title and became intrigued. Sadly, this information comes from Vice, poor journalism at best.

His character has been my inspiration to be in advertising for the past 5 years. Stopped the video as soon as VICE called him an art director. He is a copywriter turned creative director.

Donald Draper wished he was George Lois.
Neal Kydd (1 year ago)
Don Draper is a brilliant creative fiction - a copywriter based Creative Director. Copywriters generally do make the best team leaders. George Lois is a Creative. A man hard done by at times - a man who set himslef, with a little luck, in the right place with the right ideas at the right time. A man who created himself, as much as the mixture of illusion, ethics, politics and culture that make good advertising. All good creatives steal. Inspiration is not theft.

this is stupid
Lmao, ugh, this just made me feel just a bit older. I remember those television commercials! I loved watching Mad Men and recently did a rewatch of every show. Don wouldn't do an interview like that because he was hiding who he really was. He did desert and steal an identity if you remember but he might just possibly hook up with the interviewer if she was female before turning the interview down.

commercial artist ....I like Warhol
